Wish every team would play a scrimmage or game in these old gyms.  So cool.  
 

I’ve been in Highland’s old gym, think it’s weightroom now.  I remember playing in Holmes’ old gym I think.  All I remember is the balcony.

I think the founding date is correct, from something once read in an "Enquirer" archive. It predates even Louisville Male (c. 1856).

The answer man on the history of "The Castle" is, I believe, @allsport71. He's schooled me once or twice. ?

The gym is still used, mostly for pratice things, we have been practicing softball in there this past spring' baseball does as well, we have a batting game in there, balcony is gone, still a couple of stands in there. During covid peak it was used as an additional lunch room to keep students separated.

It’s referred to as Ashland’s Alumni gym but when first opened on March 4, 1927 was called Ashland High School gym. I’m trying to track down some pics of her from over the years and it’s been refurbished and Ashland and West Carter played there back in February. The freshmen use it for their tournaments and when Ashland first switched from 2 junior high schools to a middle school, what had started out as Coles jr high(is the building adjacent to the gym) became Verity middle school my 8th grade year I was at Putnam jr high the last year we had both. 

Might be interesting if any gyms are being repurposed. Don't know if it's still standing or how it's used, but here's an older pic of the old gym from Hall HS in Harlan County.

On Google maps, it looks to be on the property of Appalachian Challenge Academy in Grays Knob, about three miles south of Harlan.

The gym at "Old" Newport HS, a 1929 addition to the 1927 building, the school's sixth iteration.

This gym was in the rotation to host the Northern Kentucky Regionals when it was among the area's largest, (it was the biggest HS gym in the state in '29) up through the 1960s, and in use until the "Newest" Newport HS opened in 1980.

The Wildcats won 10 of their 12 Regional titles while playing here - 1932, '35-'36-'37, '40, '50, '52, '54-'55, and '62. "The Den" also held banners from two Sweet 16 runners-up finishes for '35 and '54, as well as three for semifinals appearances in '25, '32, and '55. 

Last games I saw here were in the mid '70s, Newport teams with Mitch McIntosh, Dick Boothe, Bill Weier, and Dave Schlosser. Special notice for some players, men from the track and field world - Darrell Bedford, Darrell Simpson, Clint Miller, Len Slaughter, and the late Fred Lane. ✊

"The Roy" at Henry County will celebrate it's 60th year next year as the host of the 8th Region Boys Tournament.  The Roy L. Winchester Gymnasium has been updated in the past few years with new scoreboards (Used to have the big square one in the middle of the gym above half court), a new floor was put in about 2 years ago.  One of the best atmosphere's for high school basketball, especially at tournament time.

Perhaps someone knows, but why is the letter at center court of many old gyms oriented from goal-to-goal and not sideline-to-sideline as today? I remember the old Lancaster High School had a big green "L" in the center court exactly like this "N" on the Newport floor.

? Living History ~ The old Wayland Gym saw high school action again last night. Floyd Central (Wayland) defeated Knott County Central (Hindman) 53-42. 

Great to see an old treasure restored, with fans in the stands, cheerleaders on the the sidelines, and on the floor, the teams of old honored with throwback jerseys. 

Just great work being done by the "Glory Road Project" and the "Mountain Sports Hall of Fame."

I'm curious if there are pics or info on the gym at Crescent Springs HS, home of the Comets. Before Dixie Heights HS opened in the late 1930's, CSHS was the northern "Kenton County" high school (possibly the only KCPS HS?)

No pictures.  The old Lexington Dunbar gym, 1923/1967.  The school was turned into a community center, still operates today.  The gym is still in great shape.  Was there a couple weeks ago to watch the new Dunbar play Louisville Central.  Well worth the trip.
