Officiating shortage solution thesis

Raising the pay isn't gonna fix things... Crowd control is only thing that bothered me, and is why I wouldn't do Basketball. No gym in Ky besides Frankfort has the space for refs to work.

I agree the overarching issue is ultimately a lack of respect for authority and the failure of any powers that be to do anything about it.

To piggy back off this idea, it would be awesome if colleges/universities offered officiating classes as an elective. Go through the NFHS rule books, focus on technique, rotations, assignments, etc. Then have a tie in to the local association to get new officials started.

There was a class like this at the University of Evansville back when I was there in the mid 90's.  I took it as a PE elective but never did anything beyond using it as a means to get a work study job officiating intramurals.   One guy in my class actually pursued a career as a basketball official.  Ended up working some NCAA D3 games while he was still in college.  Can't remember his name so I can't follow up to see how far he ever advanced.

5 man crew was $90 after sept we got a $5 raise.

7 man crew was $75 after sept was $5 raise. This is per CKYFOA.

You have to arrive hr and a half before kickoff to pregame, You normally work your regular 9-5 and then go ref, you don't get home till 11:30-midnight on Fridays.

Then you have to factor in the cost of gas, wear and tear on your car, plus likely have to buy dinner as well. (Maybe the schools give the officials a free hot dog or something, IDK)  Not much profit after factoring those expenses in.  It's definitely something you would do because you love it and not because your making any real money.  You could make much more than that in the same time frame delivering for Door Dash and without a crowd of people constantly reminding you how much you suck at your job.

I think there are plenty of gyms in the state for officials to effectively work games, so not sure you have been around the state to view those.

I don't know about a couple of those... I've been in a few and if a fan wanted to reach out and get you they could.

I mean... as a fan if I wanted to get an NFL ref I could given that I wait for the right opportunity and am prepared to face the consequences lol.

Exactly....

I tried to paste the viral video of the recent altercation of the Coach choking the ref in an AAU Basketball game BUT due to the age restriction guidelines by YouTube it wouldn't allow me.....don't know if there is a way around it....but if not, just go to YouTube and type Ref gets choked.  Happened 7 days ago or so in Thousand Oaks, CA.......

My follow up question:

How much $$$ you want to get paid to deal with that behavior????

This is exactly what I was talking about with game and facilities managers. I think it's highly unlikely this escalated so quickly that nobody could have prevented it.
