December 27, 200619 yr I don't want to make fun of the situation with President Ford, but does anyone remember Dana Carvey on SNL playing Tom Brokaw wanting to take a long vacation so he 'pre-records' the news with every possible thing that might happen why he was off. The main thrust of the joke was that he recorded about 101 different variations of how Gerald Ford might possibly die, eaten by lions, plane crash, etc...I don't want to make light of his passing; but that is the first thing that popped into my head when I heard the news -- which, by the way, I first read right here on BGP. Can't tell you how many times I've heard big news first on BGP.

December 27, 200619 yr From a personal perspective, Gerald Ford was an Eagle Scout, an offensive lineman, and a gentleman. Those things should just about sum it up. From a professional perspective, he was responsible for the appointment of John Paul Stevens to the Supreme Court, and that just about sums it up, too. As with the rest of America, I offer condolences to Betty and their children. I think it will be interesting to watch how this man's place in American history unfolds. Maybe I CAN be President someday. I feel the way many others do... he wasn't a great President, but he was a great man.
December 28, 200619 yr He was a good decent man who did what he thought was best for the country at that time. I hope that history will see that and give him his dues. He obviously still adored his wife and that's not a bad thing to be said for a man. He raised children who truly loved him and that's not a bad gig either. Sometimes in life all we can hope for is people who love us and to be known as a decent person and I think he qualifies for both of those.

I lived through that mess (had just entered EKU) and followed it in the news. President Ford handled the aftermath of Watergate for the best interest of the nation. But it cost him the presidency (barely) in 1976.

His pardoning of Nixon peeved many, but he may have saved the nation from being torn apart in the aftermath. He may have not been a great leader, but he brought a wholesomeness back to the Oval Office that had been missing in the previous 11 years,

There seems to be a lack of self-sacrificing, honorable service to the nation in this win-at-all-costs era of American politics. The bag of dirty tricks is in play all the time, with little regard to the damage it does to the political process. It's both refreshing and nostalgic to hear about men who took their lumps to avoid dragging the country through wrenching, divisive events.

I think that there are a lot of good and honorable people out there who would like to serve in a political office but are unwilling to put themselves and their families through the personal meat grinder.
December 29, 200619 yr For a guy who never ran for VP or for President before acquiring those offices, he sure did have a lot of "stuff" land on his plate.
