  • Cincy St X was #1 in nation heading into Ft Thomas that year. They just had their way in Louisville and headed to DCM for the Ky trifecta and got sucker punched ending their National title bid.

  • Belfry's 2015 'ship was impressive. Dominating a solid Lex Cov team 43-0. Also, Mayfield's 42-0 beating of Williamsburg back in 2013.

Highlands 2009 campaign was ugly for many. They would have won any classification State final that year without argument.

St. X was pretty decent that year.

2011:  Trinity 62, Scott County 21

2012:   Trinity 61, Pleasure Ridge Park 7.

Off the top of my head, the 2011 5A Championship fits the bill for me:

Bowling Green 55

Anderson County 3

That was QB Scooter Hollis' team.  The young man accounted for over 300 yards and 4 TDs himself.  BG had about 550 yards to Anderson's 120.

BG opened the game running veer to pay tribute to Coach Haley. Went 3 and out. After that the offense didn’t have much trouble moving the ball.

Highlands beat Waggoner 56-7 in 1998. Lorenzen and Smith’s senior year. Waggoner scored late in the fourth quarter when most the starters were pulled.

Most of the starters?  I'd hope the sophomores and freshmen were making memories in a state title game if they're up 7-8 touchdowns in the 4th.

Yeah actually a bunch of 2s came in mid 3rd quarter. When Wagoner scored there was a number of freshman in the game.

Still my all time favorite buzz.  DCM was electric.  My memory isn’t as good now but wasn’t that the game our lean defensive line took on Goliath?

Two good ones. Lexington Catholic had a long punt return into Belfry territory and that was basically the only good play for the Knights all game.

Mayfield routed Williamsburg. I remember Williamsburg coach Jerry Herron saying in the paper the next day "we came down here and did what a lot of others have done. We were overwhelmed." (Paraphrased). Williamsburg came back the next season and played one of the best championship games, losing an overtime heartbreaker to Mayfield.

I took my son to this Mayfield vs Williamsburg II.  At first glance, I was like “there is no way Williamsburg is going to lose. They are HUGE!” But Mayflied did what they do. They found a way to win!  I think an extra point was the difference.

I'm sure someone will fill in the blanks for me but I recall Highlands having a defensive lineman who weighed less than 200 pounds facing some behemoth from St  X and St. X could not get anything done against him.

Brandon Roller was an absolute stud of a linebacker. One of the best high school linebackers I have ever seen.

Another fun fact that makes that team's accomplishments even more impressive are they changed quarterbacks in the middle of season. Bardo got injured and was replaced by sophomore Patrick Towles. When Bardo returned from injury Highlands moved him to RB. Think about that.

That happened in that game. Bardo had a long run and was hit out of bounds by the stairs and was hurt. That’s when Towles came in. So Highlands starting QB went down and still beat them.

It was Cam Dierig who went against the OT who was committed to Notre Dame as one of the best OT in the country. Cam gave him everything he wanted and then some. Sadly, the young man  (who’s name is escaping me right now) passed away after an accident in Panama City on spring break and never had the opportunity to play for the Irish.

Cam Dierig 5'9 180lbs (H) vs. Matt James 6'8 305lbs.

Smile every time I think about it. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.
