Impact of no football in fall

It’s important to note that none of these numbers would not have been at zero had football been played this fall, but it would be safe to assume that they would be drastically lower than those figures. It’s also missing important perspective on what 2019 numbers were in those areas.

Looks like we averted some bad impacts by having football in fall unlike other states.

Those are some intriguing numbers. Wouldn't surprise me if there are some doctorial candidates examine this impact in the coming years for their thesis.

For sure!

Additionally the lack of in person education and mental health will be examined ad nauseum.

As will lack of in-person education and education outcomes.  Tons of longitudinal studies just waiting to be done on that.

Some of the claims made by the anti mask and anti restriction crowd are proving false.  For example, people claimed suicides would go up because of all the restrictions but suicide rates for 2020 were almost exactly the same as in recent years.

However, I believe there definitely were major negative impacts from virtual schooling and sports restrictions that will have repercussions for the next several years, or longer.

Suicide is tough to pin down because there are so many factors that go into someone's decision to take their own life.  With that said, suicides due to lockdowns/restrictions should be pretty measurable and it is a "new" column in the statistical analysis of suicides.

I'm not sure how exact the numbers can be but I do personally know young men who "probably" would have had a much different life if not for football, basketball, baseball and the like in high school.  If not for a coach or two along the way also that may have pointed a twig in another direction that allowed them to grow straighter as it were.  Those people that say, "he's/she's just a coach" may truly never know the impact that these men and women have on people's lives.

You sure about that?

Even more alarming, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently asked young adults if they had thought about killing themselves in the past 30 days, 1 in 4 said they had.

In Arizona’s Pima County, officials have sent two health bulletins alerting doctors and hospitals to spikes in suicides. In Oregon’s Columbia County, the number of suicides by summer had already surpassed last year’s total. In the sprawling Chicago suburbs, DuPage County has reported a 23 percent rise compared with last year. And in the city itself, the number of suicides among African Americans has far surpassed the total for 2019, even as officials struggle to understand whether the deaths are being driven by the pandemic, racial unrest or both. What has shocked medical examiners in Chicago is the age range — from a 57-year-old deputy police chief to a 9-year-old child.

Since schools shut their doors in March, an early-warning system that monitors students’ mental health episodes has sent more than 3,100 alerts to district officials, raising alarms about suicidal thoughts, possible self-harm or cries for care. By December, 18 students had taken their own lives.

"Kids have hit a wall," said Christine Garcia, a San Francisco psychologist who says on Halloween night eight teenagers ended up in a San Francisco emergency room after attempted suicides. "Typical is usually one or two at most, and eight is an insane number."

There are countless articles available on the subject.  I have two teenage daughters and I have personally seen how being shut out of school has affected their mental health.

This is where I pulled the data I cited.

That link says about 48,000 suicides in 2020.

That link has suicides in 2018 at the same number, 48,000.

I can tell you that the current state of sports now has its challenges to our athletes, Even though we can play here in KY, it has been tough on kids that rely a lot on coaches, peer groups, to give them support and appropriate socialization. A lot of kids have fell through the cracks with all the rules and lack of time together.

I don’t doubt that not having football/sports had a negative impact. Not for even a second. But these numbers aren’t presented with any context. A comparison to previous years would tell more of the story, and would absolutely need to be included for these numbers to mean anything. When presenting statistical evidence to back up a theory, you can’t just “assume”. And one has to wonder about some of the numbers presented. 35 new gang members? Did they just show up at the local gang meetings and ask about membership numbers. And new fathers? Wouldn’t the process of becoming a new father start well before football season? Same thing with dropouts..they likely would have occurred before football was cancelled.

Kids (athletes) need to be in school.  In Louisville alone, there over 500 students unaccounted for in the Jefferson county school district.  This means that over 500 kids have not attended school one day in person or online. This has had a tremendous impact.on our young people, way more than covid itself.

What's also bad with this is you can be assured all 500 of those students will be passed onto the next grade level.

What is that number normally?
