A hat.

A toboggan. However, I have learned living in the north that this is an incorrect use and "hat" is what I should say.

How about this: Supposing you had a coat tree at your house, and there were all of these hats on it. You and your significant other are getting ready to leave, and you would like them to hand you the hat in the original post. How would you ask them to give you that specific hat?

I don't wear hats unless it is really cold or I am golfing, so if I asked m'lady to grab my hat, I imagine that she would grab what I needed, but if I were to be specific, I imagine I would ask for my winter hat or beanie.

A little further North it's called a "tuque".  I vaguely remember calling it a knit hat when I was younger.
