Officially announced his retirement today. Now for the sports talk argument. Is he a Hall of Famer?

I don't believe so but he wouldn't be the first above average QB inducted.

I appreciate your opinion and know you're not the only one that thinks this way. What do you believe a QB should do to be in the hall? Or what do you not believe he has done?

I don't think he is a HOF'er. 2 Super Bowl MVP's is certainly a great feat. But in the regular season he was just good. .500 career record, QB rating under 85, never named All-Pro, no league MVP, never led the league in any statistical category, except INT's, not even top 5 of his era (P. Manning, Brees, Favre, Brady, Rogers, Roethlisberger and Warner come to mind for me as being better), and only 6 trips to the playoffs in 16 years.

 

He will get in. But he shouldn't.

Plunkett has two Super Bowl wins (but not MVPs). Plenty of other average QB’s have Super Bowl wins though. Eli is a very good QB who happened to play his two best games in the Super Bowl. And if Tyree doesn’t catch a ball thrown up for grabs with his helmet, Eli would only have one SB win and MVP award.

I’m aware of what you asked, and as I said in an earlier post, Eli’s two SB MVP’s do set him apart. Plunkett is the closest guy to Eli in the fact that he did win Two Super Bowls.

 

But all other things being equal, it’s really only the two Super Bowl MVPs that clearly even put Eli in the HOF talk. Yes he did put up great numbers if you look at his whole career. But during his whole career, you can’t point to a single year where he could have been considered the best, and only a couple years where he was even top 5. He had more years, especially late in his career where he was a lot closer to the bottom than the top.

 

Eli was durable. He was pretty good in a few years. Average in a lot of years. Pretty bad in a few others. Compiled a lot of great numbers due to his durability. And he had one real HOF type accomplishment in winning two Super Bowl MVPs. Add it all up, and I say he had a very nice career. But didn’t do enough to get in the HOF. But I’m sure he will, and if Namath and Stabler (among others) are in, then it’s hard to keep Eli out.

4 playoff 4th quarter come backs (3rd most in NFL history)

 

Top 10 in yards, touchdowns, completions.

 

Never missed a game because of injury.

 

And if you really look into the 2011 season, there's no arguing against him being a top 3 QB that year at the very least. He willed a team with the worst O-line in football, no running game, and a defense ranked near the bottom of the league all year, to the playoffs. In those playoffs, he led the Giants who beat the Aaron Rodgers led 15-1 Packers in Lambeau. He took on one of the best defenses in the league and beat San Francisco in San Francisco for the NFC title game. Then he went on to make one of the, if not the greatest throw in super bowl history on a game winning drive (his pass to Manningham in SB 46 is as perfect of a throw as Ive ever seen).

 

That was just the 2012 season.

 

I don't know where you get that he was near the bottom of the league late in his career. He played on some bad teams, but very rarely was Eli the reason the Giants lost.

He will get in and should on the first ballot and yes, I agree that he is a Hall of Famer.

 

Top 10 in yards, touchdowns, completions at his retirement in my opinion should lock him in.

 

People like to look at the end of a career and say "look how bad someone was" and use it in an arguement to keep someone out.

Re: the 2011-12 season...

 

The Giants O line was ranked 32nd by PFF.

 

The Giants were last in yards per carry AND yards rushing per game.

 

Eli threw an NFL record 15 4th quarter TD passes.

 

The Giants defense finished in the bottom 5.

 

 

They won the Super Bowl that year. Without Eli they probably wouldnt have made the playoffs.
