December 26, 20196 yr We are talking about the Mike Brown led Bengals correct? If anyone can screw things up, it is certainly him or any direct descendant of his. From 2011-2015 the Bengals made the playoffs 5 straight years. That did happen didn't it? Wasn't Mike Brown there during those 5 years? In the 16 years Marvin coached the Bengals, he had a winning record and the Bengals were in the playoffs 7 times. My point is, the Bengals can win under this front office and in 5 of the last 9 years the Bengals were in the playoffs. But I guess we just ignore all that for the same tired old comments from 25 years ago.

When was the last time this team made the Super Bowl? Yes it is the same old tired story.
December 26, 20196 yr And the same cheapskate kept Marvin for 2 or 3 years too many and replaced him with the likes of Dave Shula. When was the last time this team made the Super Bowl? Yes it is the same old tired story. I have said this before for some reason people act like if they got a GM that magically everything would be ok. The Bengals from 2003 to 2015 had more consistent success than then majority of teams in the NFL who do have GMs. Shoot the Cleveland Browns have had many GMs since they came back and still have only made the playoffs once in 20 years. Hiring a GM doesn’t guarantee anything. As for Zac Taylor being Shula. I agree to disagree with you on him. Even people like Lap who was around when Shula was hear says Taylor is nowhere near being like Shula. Shula seemed lost from the beginning. Lap even says and even the players talk about the Culture he is establishing is really good. Players have said this is the closest locker room they ever been in. Things people complained with about Marvin has been much better such as penalties are way down, clock management is ten times better. Even the defense while not good still, is much better than last year when last year they were on pace to be the worst defense in history. Now as a play caller I would agree that he hasn’t shown to be to good in that area. However, as a head coach he has shown promise, which is something Shula never did. Plus the players actually play hard for him too even during a horrible season.
December 26, 20196 yr Do you believe Burrow is a bust? Bust? No. Legit franchise changing QB? I’m not sold at this point.
December 27, 20196 yr Mike Brown needs to sell tickets and a new QB will do that much better than a lineman will. Burrow will absolutely be the pick
December 28, 20196 yr Bust? No. Legit franchise changing QB? I’m not sold at this point. This post got me to thinking. What QB's did everyone think were franchise changing QB's? Here are the recent first round picks: 2019 - 1 Murray; 6 Jones; 15 Haskins 2018 - 1 Mayfield; 3 Darnold; 7 Allen; 10 Rosen; 32 Jackson 2017 - 2 Trubisky; 10 Mahomes; 12 Watson 2016 - 1 Goff; 2 Wentz; 26 Lynch 2015 - 1 Winston; 2 Mariota 2014 - 3 Bortles; 22 Manziel; 32 Bridgewater 2013 - 16 EJ Manuel 2012 - 1 Luck; 2 Griffin; 8 Tannehill; 22 Weeden 2011 - 1 Newton; 8 Locker; 10 Gabbert; 12 Ponder 2010 - 1 Bradford; 25 Tebow Interesting looking at that list in retrospect. I would say the QB's there that virtually everyone thought were franchise changing QB's were Goff, Wentz, Winston, Luck and Newton. As we look at that list where does Burrow fall?
December 28, 20196 yr The most common evaluation is Goff, which at this point is a guy that can be very good with a high level compliment of parts around him. If any of those areas around him struggle, the production takes a significant dip. My biggest concern in all of this is the ability to make an even adequate rebuild of this roster before at least 2022. Point blank, the Bengals are not anywher close to position themselves to benefit from the rewards of having an above-average QB on a rookie deal and that is best case on Burrow as it currently stands. I'd be all for Burrow if this roster looked remotely competent to make noise over the next 3-4 years. Instead I see a lenghty rebuild that doesn't provide any advantage the stud QB on a rookie contract is supposed to provide.

If the Bengals get 75-85% of either one, all they have to do is build around him to your point.
December 28, 20196 yr If the Bengals get 75-85% of either one, all they have to do is build around him to your point. So the Bengals just need to be a competent NFL franchise. What could possibly go wrong.
December 28, 20196 yr He just makes plays! Love the MOJO. In Joe we trust even Mike Brown can’t mess this up.
December 28, 20196 yr Yes. All of the same ones I had when the game started. You’re still mad he picked LSU over UC lol. Most forget those were his finalist. He’s gonna be fine in Cincy, you’ll see, give him a chance.

It seems you're a little slow picking up what I'm saying. I have no issue with Burrow, and think he will be a good NFL QB. My issue is with the Bengals roster, and that they aren't in a position to take advantage of drafting a QB 1st and actually benefiting from it. They have no draft capital, won't play the free agent game at the higher levels and don't have much to work with in terms of trading for value. That makes it very likely that by the time the roster is turned over, Burrow will be near the end of his rookie deal and ready to either get out or get paid. The franchise is in flames, and Burrow is throwing a single bucket of water on the blaze at this point.

From your mentor Lance: The only downside to a 7 TD first half for Burrow is the final elimination of the topic "What should the #Bengals do at No. 1?" for the next four months of Sports Talk. At some point the Bengals have to have a QB. Which year do you want to experiment with a possible franchise QB, 2020, 2021, or 2022? Have to start building somewhere. There is no easy fix but it’s clear that, Joe is the start of the rebuild.
