The DeSales fanbase, in specific Coach Ty Scroggins, have been in an up-roar after a highlight video from a Louisville news station taken from behind the end zone shows Belfry's Peyton Hensley lying on the ground with the ball shy of the goal line on Belfry's TD in the 2nd Overtime.

 

To say the DeSales fanbase feel the call was wrong is an understatement as they have openly discussed protesting the game and even fans imploring to "impeach" Belfry.

 

A new video was shared on twitter from nearly in line with the goal line and the official who signaled the call (by a DeSales fan at that). You make the decision, did the ball break the plane or was he stopped short?

FWIW, in response to this video Scroggins comment to the user who posted was:

"Look at the other two. No way he is in. Great game Bad call"

Hard to tell anything conclusive in that video, but I would lean toward him getting in. One thing people have to remember is the nose of the football has to barely cross only the FRONT of that goal line. It does not have to go all the way over the goal line, or even stay across the goal line.

 

I will say the official was on it (hard not to be given the play starting at the 3) and without absolutely clear evidence I would have to go with what he saw.

Also, at what point in the video is the still frame taken? That's the problem with still frames and our society today, we can make it whatever we need it to be. I could have an entire video of a man catching a falling baby, but if I manipulate it and still frame it correctly I have footage of a man throwing an innocent baby in the air.

 

I'll also point out this is all from a NKY resident who has never even seen either team play, so no dog in the fight.

From all the angles it seems it is more on his left hand , center of body. It definitely is not at the furthest right point where his shoulder was at it's deepest across the line.

The ref is in perfect position on the goal line and signals TD before the runner is on the ground. I will go with the person with the perfect view and no bias- TD.

This. Absolutely this. There's not a team out there that hasn't been on the winning end and on the losing end of a questionable call. These are high school sports, and high school sports don't have replay. Pitching a fit over replay doesn't accomplish much of anything.

 

Also, after I've watched all the videos, I haven't seen a single thing that can convince me he made it in, and I haven't seen a single thing that can convince me that he didn't make it in.

This is exactly where I am. The ref has a perfect view and signaled immediately and confidently, which is exactly what he should have done.

The craziest thing I have witnessed on this subject was in the Georgia 1A Private playoffs last year.

 

The home team has live video on their jumbo scoreboard, obviously not something very many schools have the luxury of.

 

There was a bang-bang call on the field that did not go the home team's way. The Coach proceeded to argue with the official and then called a timeout. During the timeout the video screen showed a replay over and over of the call while the Head Coach held quorum and insisted the officials watch it.

 

Coming out of the timeout the officials then chose to reverse the call.

 

I do believe they ultimately made the right call eventually, but I don't think they should never have over turned the call given the circumstances. It was a Catch 22. Had this been at literally 99.9% of other high schools the call would have never been reversed.

I watched video and would lean on him getting in on the initial push. The official has the best view and does not have the luxury of video to make a 100% determination in close play but I think he made the right call.

I do think he’s in, but with his back turned you never see where the ball is. The players head and shoulders only get it. My biggest problem is that a hold and block in the back wasn’t called on the 2pt conversion. I was standing right at the fence by the end zone. #9 for Belfry wrapped his arms around the waist of #16 for DeSales. Then pushed him in his back as he passed. At the end of the day it wasn’t called and DeSales unfortunately lost. I think it’s time to move on, and look forward to them playing again next year.

Looked like he scored from the clips I saw. Personally, the fact that the official was in perfect positioning, didn't hesitate or ask for help, but rather hit his whistle and calmly signaled TD is all I can ask for. Coach Scroggins is one of the best coaches in this state and has seen many TD's and GL stands, but from I'm seeing, he was in. Congrats to Belfry on the win.
