Hearing that Jenkins High School has dropped their football program. I saw that Pikeville had posted an opening for a game and some others have as well. They were 0-3 (with one forfeit) on the season and only have 13 players on the roster. Sad, but inevitable day.

Hope not forever.

The last coach Fleming I believe 2 yrs ago had them at 34 players most ever, but the super gave the job to someone else letting Fleming go. The kids won't play for him. They wanted Fleming to stay. Sad, very sad.

Very sad to hear. I feel for the players and the community.

I’m not sure what Jenkin’s 9-12 enrollment is but they have to be one of the smallest football schools in the state. My guess is it has to be difficult year after year to keep the participation numbers up on their football team.

Hate hearing this.

 

On a side note, if you listen closely you can hear Coach Dixon's phone ringing from Coach Haywood for the October 11th date that is now potentially open.

Male enrollment is around 80-100. The info on why they're not playing came from a Friend who's son is on the team. Said it will be hard to restore.

This isn't surprising I counted after I heard they left Jackson County at halftime last Friday and on KHSAA roster either half or a littler over half were seniors, this was inevitable I'm afraid.

Echoing everyone else this is very sad. I hate it for the Jenkins players and I can't help but think this is a sign of things to come with other high school football programs too.

Traveling down in that country via 23 it seems there are a lot of neighboring schools that should allow transfers from Jenkins. I know it will not help the seniors, but future kids with the desire to play football from the Jenkins community should be permitted to transfer to a school where football is accessible.

The Fleming kid (John) I believe put up some good numbers in the first game vs Breathitt Co. he is senior it would be nice if he wanted to be able to go and play somewhere.imo

IMHO, every single one of these Jenkins kids should be eligible to play at Letcher Central Day 1.

The Jenkins/Berea game is listed on the KHSAA as "status to be determined." I'd imagine this means the KHSAA doesn't want to charge Jenkins seven forfeiture fees. Berea has no remaining open dates, however, so they can't get a replacement game.

 

Phelps has already found a replacement game. They'll be playing Sayre on October 18. No site is listed but Sayre played Jenkins at Kentucky Christian University last year and that could be where this game is played.

 

As for the other schools, I know Pikeville is looking for a replacement game. The others could be searching as well but I've not seen anything on the Listserv. They might be content to get an extra week off to rest players and heal injuries.
