What two sides do you prefer with steak?

Asparagus might be the worst vegetable ever.

Asparagus isn't the worst. But it's only turnips and rutabagas that are keeping it from being the worst.

The anti-asparagus contingent is catching me completely off guard. I had no idea this was a thing, amongst even a vocal minority. I'm legitimately shook on this one.

Not to go down a rabbit hole, but some people can straight up butcher asparagus when preparing it. You do that, it is one of the worst vegetables to consume.

In fairness, I could butcher any vegetable and make it horrible, that isn't really the litmus test...is it?

Yes, but I am saying asparagus is much easier to butcher and not able to season well, if that makes sense.

Roasted Brussel sprouts and chopped salad, no dressing.

Asparagus, when cooked correctly is amazing. I’ve had it when it was not cooked well, it makes a big difference.

I would never choose asparagus as a side given the choice. Quite literally, never. That's a good way to ruin a good steak dinner.

I was the same way until about five or so years ago. My grandma would make asparagus regularly for family dinners and I absolutely hated it (she was a great cook though) it was essentially just steamed, crunchy, flavorless asparagus.

Fast forward 15 years and I tried asparagus that my wife made and it was completely different and I loved it. The key for me is plenty of olive oil, salt, pepper and saute it until it's not crunchy, then add finely grated parmesan. It actually pairs well with steak when cooked that way, at least for me it does.

Your final nine words are on point.

Potato pack and grilled asparagus. I have to be careful, though, as the steak+asparagus is a double whammy on the gout. Triple when you consider I'm definitely drinking beers.

Most decidedly. On top of that, some folks wait too long to cut it and the same dilemma is in play.

At home:

Oven roasted broccoli with red pepper sprinkled on top and southern style green beans.

On the road:

Potato(baked or mashed depending on my mood and the options) and a green vegetable.
