Covington Catholic 38 Johnson Central 14 (Take #3)

Colonels rally to reach 6th final

Covington Catholic capped a perfect Friday for Northern Kentucky high school football teams by rallying to defeat previously unbeaten Johnson Central with 28 unanswered points in a 38-14 Class AAA semifinal victory at Johnson Central.

The Colonels (11-3) joined Friday's earlier local winners, Class A Newport Central Catholic and Class AAAA Ryle in next week's state finals at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville.

CovCath plays 13-1 Bowling Green, a 21-14 Friday winner over Louisville Central, in next Friday's 7:30 p.m. Class AAA championship game. That's a rematch of the 1994 Class AAA final, won 24-21 by the Colonels.

While not in attendance, I heard it was a great high school atmosphere with wonderful support for JC from the community. That's what I love about high school football in smaller communities. It really adds a lot to the game as well as to the memories the boys will have.

Grimm must be very , very good.

In looking at the reports from each of the newspapers it is obvious how the Ashland paper viewed the game and what they think of private vs public debates.

It sounded on the radio and on the internet like a great game and both teams should be commended.

This is one Eagle fan that wants to wish CCH the best of luck. You came in and showed us what a great football program is like and were we need to get to. Best of luck next week.

Fireworks, Blooming Onions, and tow trucks parked on the track with Go Eagles banners really made for an exciting atmosphere.

Grim was good, but was most effective in tandem with Jonson. CovCath was really on their heals in the first half.

Congrats to CovCath, I expected them to win but, WOW! Do NKY proud and bring home state.

Johnson Central, congrats on a great season. You have nothing to hang your heads about, good luck to the seniors and good luck to the underclassmen next year.

I'm glad to hear that Grim will be OK. :thumb:

I reread the article 2 or 3 more times and I am having a hard time trying to find what you are referring to. I keep thinking I must be missing something. The only thing that I read was that they mentioned that Covington Catholic was a powerful private school (which obviously they are), and that's about it. I could not read any reference to a private/ public debate at all in the article, let alone what their particular views might be.

Congratulations to CCH for the win, good luck next week.

JC had a great season – best in the school’s history. Their program is clearly on the rise.

From the Cincy Enquirer:

Colonels finish strong

PAINTSVILLE - Covington Catholic had some tense moments early Friday night but prevailed with a 38-14 victory over Johnson Central at Eagle Field in the Class AAA semifinals..

Colonel-Fan, thanks for all the links and a very good analysis of the game. You even were kind enough to edit out the headline of this article:

Colonels finish strong

CovCath rolls past Paintsville 38-14, advances to title game

Obviously, there is a sports headline editor who doesn't follow Kentucky HS football, Paintsville lost to Hazard two weeks ago. They could at least have said "Johnsonville." ;) But I'm glad you (and therefore we) get coverage in a big paper like the Inquirer at all, so please don't think it's "sour grapes" from me.

Cov Cath is a great program with great student and community support. Hopefully JC is now on the path to building that kind of program. Good luck to the Colonels (and especially their seniors in their last game) next week.

The first half was basically even, with a slight edge to JC on the scoreboard. Cath should have taken the lead on the final play of the half, but for a dropped pass in the endzone. Covcath owned the second half, and while the injury to Johnson and refusal to go to the air appeared to hurt JC, the better team won.

After getting home I was so disappointed with some of the remarks from the threads, that I didn't post what I should have done. I will do so now....

Long, long bus ride, but I am glad I took the bus... Beautiful ride through the mountains with some really, really nice people. First impressions as the bus came into town. Fry the Colonels, beat CovCath, Win JC, Big game tonight, and a really nice graphic about the game on the car dealership as you enter into the town. WOW, the area is really ready for this game, I sure hope the JC kids aren't...

JC was nice enough to have great parking for the ten busses (one of the busses broke down on the way) right in front of the school. Classy thing to do and thanks....

Walking into the stadium you could tell this was a first class operation. Your lighting was great, best I have seen all year, and oh the smell of the food, great. People were laughing smiling saying HI. The Paintsville HS kids were sitting on our side and were great. BTW your seating is wonderful, much, much better than LexCath and it seemed to me at least to be bigger than the Team from Ft. Thomas. I enjoyed watching whoever it was up on the Mountain do their light show, and bonfire fire. Do they do that at each game? Again the smells of burgers, and the sounds of a happy community just enjoying a great Friday, as we watched the clock tick down from 80 some odd minutes to 00..

The young man from your football team did an outstanding job in singing the National Anthem and the young ladies did a super job of singing My Old Kentucky Home. Then the fireworks, hopefully someone in the community made a real nice donations as those fireworks don't come cheaply and you certainly didn't skimp on them, it was fun.....

The field: As was posted prior to the game that it was wet in the red zone but it was a little more than that.... The checkerboard end zone was neat, but the black goal line, took a little to get used to......but every thing was done to make us feel welcomed and did up all first class. Congratulations on making us northerns feel welcome prior to the start of the game.

Won't comment about the game, as many, many more will be doing so and by now everybody has read the papers....

Thought the fireworks at the end of the game were great especially since JC lost and I don't think I would have blamed them (certainly with the young Grim kid getting hurt at the end) if you didn't go through them at the end. I thought the nicest thing that JC did was when your announcer said something like: On behalf on the Administration, staff, and fans of JC congratulation to CovCath and good luck in the state championship next Friday. Really classy statement, from a certainly classy organization.

The only down side to me was the loud speakers, need to be louder, and the cars parking around the field with their head lights turned on.. No problem with the cars, but can't they turn off the lights?

All in all a one of the nicest places to watch a high school football game, that I have ever attended. Congrats to your school, your community, your fans and most importantly your player. Losing to CovCath in the state semi-finals in a hard fought game, is nothing to hang your head down on. You have taken that first taste of big time football, and I am sure you want more...and I am sure you will return.....to taste it again, the next time with even more success....

Thanks for a great night....

First and foremost, I'm glad our prayers for Grim were answered. I was busy calling LRCW every 15 minutes on the way home for updates (from BGP) about whether or not he was up. That is great news. Frankly, in the grand scheme of things, nothing else matters.

Awesome environment. We arrived by car at 5:00 and the stands were 80% filled by JC fans. 2 and a half hours before kickoff. Unreal. Everyone was so nice -- thanks to UnderArmour for picking up our tickets for us. It was nice to meet you...you were a great host.

As far as comparing Grim and Kramer, Grim is more of a north / south runner, and while fast, not as elusive as Kramer. To give you a sense, Kramer is to Barry Sanders as Grim is to Emmitt Smith. I hope that makes sense.

#48, the "...long black train...," was a horse. What a solid high school player. Kudos to the JC Coaching staff for not putting this young man back in when he was politic-ing to re-enter. The coaches were wise not to jeopardize his career. Love the use of songs by the JC staff...great touch. I happen to like that song too, so that helps.

I respect the JC coaches for sticking to their guns by playing man-to-man, but that wasn't going to work. I'm sure they felt like they'd stay with the girl that brought them, but it allowed our TE to get deep for a beautiful "Jeff Blake-ish" deep ball from Josh (great throw young man).

The drive down wasn't bad at all. Special shout out to the young ladies in Salyerville at the Long John's...you gals are a hoot. You can't beat fish and chicken before a big game. Good sweet tea as well.

LRCW, it was, as always, good to see you. Sorry we couldn't catch up longer. Theoldguy, it was nice to meet you finally.

Both teams played hard, the atmosphere was electric, the school does a great job hosting a big-time football game, and Congrats to the Golden Eagles on a great year!!!

Anytime! It was nice to meet you as well.

I have some great news Grimm was up and walking at the hospital they said that it was just a stinger and they say he will be ok.
