Tandy, Allen, Johnson, and Moreno are the Top players in the state in my opinion. Body of work through their career should matter but Mr. Basketball should be a weighted focus on the senior season as to which I’d probably give the edge to Tandy. It’s unfortunate but injuries and not playing several games for Allen and Moreno will affect voting.

I personally don’t think Moreno or Allen should even be in the discussion for their regions. They’ve only played 12 or 13 games and missed over half the season.

He gets love but good luck to him getting more votes than Rode or Moreno.

I am puzzled a bit by people lumping David Johnson in with Dontaie Allen and Michael Moreno in terms of the effect their injuries should have on consideration for Mr. Basketball. Depending on how far Trinity advances in the post-season, he could play in an additional 5-10 games. In my mind, his injury should not prevent him for full consideration for Mr. Basketball.

I think what will ultimately hold David Johnson back is his numbers aren't gaudy. 15 points per game, 7 boards per game, and shooting less than 33% from the arc are going to have a tough time standing toe-to-toe with some of the statistical accomplishments of some of the other nominees.

 

Not saying it is right or wrong, and he is clearly a GREAT player, but I don't expect him to have a real shot at the award.

You may be right, but it would be a shame if you are. David Johnson's scoring average is not as high as some, but I have never understood Mr. Basketball award simply going to the highest scorer in the state (there would be no need for any voting if that were the case). Johnson could score substantially more if he wanted to, but he affects a game in so many more ways. Johnson has been a multiple-year starter for one of the top teams in the State, playing one of the most competitive schedules in the State. I hope voters give him fair consideration.

I am sure his points scored and scoring average are correct, but there seem to be a lot of games where his shooting stats (fg and 3 attempts, fg's and 3's made, etc.) were not entered, which results in his shooting percentages, etc. being inaccurate. So if all you want to compare are scoring averages, you can do that, but it is tough to have any confidence in comparisons of things like shooting percentages.

I know only seniors are eligible for this award, but is it based on the senior year only or the entire high school career? I have researched the answer but have found nothing conclusive. In my opinion one should not be penalized for a season ending injury and be denied consideration when they have had wonderful careers throughout high school.

I have no clue about Tandy's stats in KHSAA but I know for a fact coaches fudge numbers here and there for their star players. We have seen as much as points added in a game to a player for multiple games and incorrect shooting percentages this season.

I also believe it will be won by KyKy. If healthy all year it be hard to not give it to Moreno though with the competition he played against with the results shown.

Allen has more upside and is more of an over all talent.....that I won't dispute. But Reid Jolly of Campbell County IMO should have been named the 10th Region Player of the Year, or at least been named co-player of the year, they did it in other regions. Reid has had a sensational senior season for the Camels. Again, not knocking the player that Allen is, but having missed so much of the season definitely should have been factored into the voting. Best of luck to Mr. Allen at UK and to Mr. Jolly the remainder of the season....hopefully he can lead CCHS back to Rupp.
