November 17, 200619 yr Not hearing much Heisman discussion this year, with previously so many teams vying for BCS games and being undefeated. Who are your favorites....Is there a clear cut favorite, since Peterson broke his collarbone....Who is in contention....Weak year? Here are some names and your thoughts.... Smith - OSU Quinn - Notre Dame Henne - Michigan Slaton - WVU McFadden - Arkansas White - WVU Rice - Rutgers
November 17, 200619 yr While I've come around on Smith as a qb, in no way do I think he's the best player in the country. I'm not sure he's the best qb in the Big 10. I think Steve Slaton may be the best.
November 17, 200619 yr Smith is the clear favorite right now. Barring a very poor performance tomorrow, he will probably win. If there is a poor performance, Hart can get into the mix a great performance. As can Quinn is he performs well at USC. If Arkansas wins out, McFadden will be in NYC; I personally believe he is the best in D1. The Heisman candidates are not that great this season.

I think Steve Slaton may be the best. Understand your point on Smith but how often, does the top rated team have a QB that is almost always, considered in discussion. Smith is more of a play maker, than pure QB but he's very consistent, running the OSU offense. Will he be a NFL type QB, perhaps not. I really believe several good players have a chance this year.
November 17, 200619 yr I agree that there isn't a standout guy in the group. I tend to lean with cshs on this one. Slaton is my vote...
November 17, 200619 yr As I said back in mid-September, for all of you that WERE supporting Calvin for the award: Calvin Johnson will no more be in NY for the Heisman Show than I will be. I just love BGP's ever-present knee-jerk reactionists. A couple of good games when we're all in short-sleeves and he's going to win the Heisman. Classic. If OSU wins tomorrow, Troy Smith wins the Heisman. Flaws in the system or not, that's the way it is. Brady Quinn, versus USC, can probably play himself close, but I don't think he can overtake Troy. I think Booty, in the ND game, could play himself into NY City as well.

Honestly forgot about Booty and USC. I agree on Johnson, excellent receiver and will probably be drafted fairly high but not a Heisman option. Are we looking at a potential USC -vs- Michigan/OSU winner in the NC game and if so, would the winner come from one of those 3?
November 17, 200619 yr I agree that there isn't a standout guy in the group. I tend to lean with cshs on this one. Slaton is my vote... Even though I think Slaton layed down against UofL he is the best back in college football right now. And the gap between he & AP isn't as wide as most people think. Slaton, Peterson, McFadden, Rice, & Lynch are the best RBs in college this year. As for the Heisman Trophy...Well, after a slow start Brady Quinn has started to play like the Heisman candidate everyone thought he was and has a shot. Troy Smith has the best chance and probably will win the award if OSU wins out, a la Gino Toretta of Miami. Honestly, the QB on the best team in the land is the odds on favorite to win this award every year. I used to think the award went to the best player on the best team in the country, but that isn't the case or Ted Ginn Jr. would win the award.
November 17, 200619 yr Smith-OSU If the win tomorrow he wins McFadden- ArkansasI they win out he gets it.

He may not be in the NYC for this event but come April, you'll hear his name before 99% of the others.

Are we looking at a potential USC -vs- Michigan/OSU winner in the NC game and if so, would the winner come from one of those 3? Oh... shut my mouth. Smith is the likely candidate, but Quinn has the better numbers. That's why I never watch or care who wins the Heisman. It's a popularity contest that should be an award to award the best player in college football.
