I wasn't able to attend the game yesterday but I do have to ask you one question. Did you forget about last years game vs LexCath? It had to be at least equally as bad.

 

Both games to end Highlands season the last two years looked erriely similary to me on HHS offensive side of the ball. Maybe Lexington Catholic was that good last year; maybe Covington Catholic is that good this year. As an outsider that read the posts on the end of HHS's season last year, it doesn't seem like there is as much anger or frustration this year. I expected Highlands to be better this year than last. Did HHS fans not expect what I did? Or is it still early, and the board will heat up at the Monday Morning water cooler meeting?

Interesting observation. I know that last year on BGP, there was a great deal of infighting among the HHS fans on this website concerning coaching and who should be starting at certain positions, etc. It got pretty heated, and one of HHS' biggest fans actually left BGP for awhile as a result (at least, in part) of this infighting. Perhaps the HHS faithful are weary to have that played out again this season.

 

Is seems that this year was at best a bit of a letdown, and at worst a terrible waste of a very talented squad. I remember the guru writing, after seeing HHS scrimmage this year, that this year's team may have been the most talented HHS squad since Gino and gang. Considering that HHS reached the AAA finals in 2003 and won it all in 2004, that's quite a compliment, and I would guess that a team with such talent finishing 7-5 (that's only ONE game over .500), being beaten by CCH twice in three weeks (with the playoff game not even being that close a contest), and being removed from the playoffs in round 2 is not quite living up to hopes/expectations.

 

I have heard from very knowledgeable HHS fans that HHS had the ability to beat LexCath at home last year in the playoffs, and the same with CCH this year. Great programs win the games that they have the ability to win (plus some of the games they play against "superior" competition). Two straight years of early playoff exits, with those two playoff losses involving some suspect game-planning is not a positive development.

 

Anyway, someone posted that the HHS fans were offering up a bunch of excuses for this loss. I don't know where he sees evidence of that happening. Clearly, the team that deserved to win the game won the game on Saturday afternoon. HHS didn't get "robbed" or "cheated," they got beat, plain and simple. I don't think that is making excuses.

That's correct, but I think some people believe that during the past couple of years, the team's talent was not fully realized by the coaching staff, whether it be because of limited/suspect game-planning or questionable personnel decisions with respect to who was playing what position (to quote the guru, HHS has a "very good RB playing QB").

 

It really seems that HHS is going to have to develop a more consistent passing game if the 'Birds are going to make it back to Louisville. I realize the team did not pass the ball well in 2004 when they won it all, but HHS' defense and ST were exceptionally strong, and I don't believe that HHS can count on having this year after year. Perhaps cultivating a better passer as starting QB for 2007 (Guidugli, as someone suggested), and moving Cecil further back in the offensive backfield along with Conner to make for a strong two-back set. Perhaps Cecil can spend some time in the defensive backfield as well, since he is so athletically gifted and HHS has some issues in the pass defense department.

That's true but if Cecil moves to RB, do they have someone to fill the QB position effectively?

As has been mentioned earlier (including by myself), the staff can take a look at which kid is the best passer, and work on developing him. If you can't pass the ball well, it makes it hard to play catch-up if you are down in a game against a good opponent.

 

For all I know, maybe Cecil is the best passer. If so, then the staff needs to spend more time working with him on the passing game. I have heard, though, that some others are better passers than Cecil. Whoever it is, please God let the staff work on the passing game with him!

HHS doesn't have a QB coach......If you ask me that is huge problem on this team. I think that the Birds would be best served with Guidugli at QB and Cecil as a RB...:thumb:
