November 7, 200619 yr At the UK/Georgia game on Saturday, Georgia was offsides on a kickoff (that went into the endzone) and Kentucky chose to take the five-yard penalty at the start of the drive. The referees placed the ball on the 25-yard line (five yards beyond the normal touchback start) and the game proceeded. Most coaches would probably do that in an effort to curtail this. UK run the KO back to the 26 and they added 5 yards to the end of the run.

November 7, 200619 yr A. One of the more idiotic rules in recent memory. B. I don't mind the extra time on replay if they eventually get it right. Maryland got hosed on a safety that was reversed on replay this weekend (still came back and won but that's beside the point). Replay is supposed to overturn incorrect calls, not correct ones.
November 8, 200619 yr Oh, I know there's a line. Hopefully no coach would ever do that, anyway. But under the rules, how would the referees "legally" be able to stop something like that from happening? How about calling an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after it's happened a couple of times.

November 8, 200619 yr This is why football is constantly evolving. In the NFL they added a time runoff for illegal motion near the end of games. Teams this year are now using illegal formations to force clock stoppages. Its just a case of cat and mouse that will go on as long as they strap them on. Pretty shrewd though.

You could, but what happens if a team is offsides twice in a row on kickoffs, accidentally? I've seen this happen occasionally and there was no intent to gain an advantage; just a stupid play. It would be hard to justify unsportsmanlike for that. But I understand your point. There just really isn't a solid way to guard against this.

A team can commit offsides to their hearts content. There is no rule against it. Therefore, there was no unsportsmanlike conduct happening and nothing to call.
November 9, 200619 yr If only JoePa had known that is day was about to get a whole lot worse. Hopefully the NCAA will take notice of this game and realize how silly this new rule really is. Indeed JoePa did have a very bad day that day, perhaps we can blame the antics of the first half, sense he was so fired up on the sidelines he was too close to the field of play lol.
