Why its hard to trust KHSAA stats and I'm a stat man

Featured Replies

SO I was checking out the 5A leaders for tackles and something struck me as odd. I wont say names or anything because I'm not sure we are allowed but this player has a lot of tackles so I wanted to see the team stats to see what was going on.

I looked at their 2nd game of the season, a 54-39 win.

The stats entered said as a team they had 35 solo tackles and 52 assisted tackles. So that equals out to 61 plays ran because you can only have 1 solo or 2 assists per play.

I looked at the team they played and here is where it gets funky.

They ran 40 plays, with 6 going for TOUCHDOWN's so there were only 34 plays where there could have been a tackle? Add in the 9 kickoffs and the total plays jump to 43 plays. Then they said as a team they had 23 sacks in the game but the QB only has 15 carries for 9 yards (High school sacks are entered in rushing, on Sundays its team passing).

Makes all stats look bad........

I would assume the KHSAA doesn't authenticate any stats sent to them which would make this either a mistake or a school that lacks integrity.

I always assumed someone just reported the stats to KHSAA and they plugged them in. No way for KHSAA to verify all those stats. I think your beef is with the schools, not the KHSAA.

Coaches or someone with coaching login credentials has to enter the stats. For us I just take what our guy gives us and put them in.

I’ve got a pretty good idea which school you’re talking about. They have some crazy stats. I think one player is averaging 18 solo tackles a game. For the most part teams do a pretty good job of reporting accurate stats.

I'm pretty sure a lot of schools do not keep tackle stats. I know the HHS stats guy very well and I know HHS does not.

I have made 3 requests to the KHSAA this year to address issues with the reporting of stats on their website. They have been extremely responsive to my requests in all 3 cases.

1. Manual reporting of team rushing totals that is the sum of individual rushing totals plus any team bad snaps or kneel downs.

2. Allowing for negative passing yards for individual receivers.

3. Allowing for "half sacks".

In all 3 cases, I could have inflated our team's numbers by taking the default. However, I think it is ethical to be as accurate as possible in reporting for our team and for our opponents. @TheDeuce is correct - KHSAA does not have the manpower to verify stat entry, but they do respond to technical issues in their website in the way stats are reported so that we can follow the standards properly (yes, there are standards).

I knew 1 and 3 but I didn’t know 2. Does it just go down as 0?

Tackles are a subjective stat unlike rushing yards and touchdowns.

I've known coaches give an assist if a player laid a hand on them any any point or jumped on the pile at the end.

I've known coaches who only give a tackle to the first person to stop forward progress.

The tackle stat is to football what the assist is to basketball and the fielding error is to baseball.

No knock at KHSAA on this, I was acknowledging which stats I was referring to. I just wish there was a way to make it so there was not a way to have more tackles than plays ran. seems easy enough. I could be wrong though.

I think many times the stat guys are volunteers, often in the stands. They just don’t get it right and some of them may not truly understand what an assisted tackle is. The coaches may just be forwarding that type of information along.

Tackle stats are the most inaccurate and corruptible stat in all of sports in my opinion. I don't think it is fair to use tackle stats to discredit all the stats.

Thinking aloud, if any school(s) are not reporting accurate stats does the KHSAA have a duty to act?

I would think that it would take other programs sending their concerns in about a school not reporting honestly for them to act on it. Not saying it isn't an important stat, but as noted earlier, tackles are very subjective. If it was a stat that many feel strongly about; passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards, touchdowns, interceptions, I think that a bigger stink would be raised.

My comment is in a different sport but our high school girls and boys basketball teams this year signed up with a company that takes game video and does the stats for the teams. That’ll be as close to accurate as possible. I think the cost is $1200 for both programs.

Do any football programs do this?

I see 5A Perry County Central beat Breathitt County 54 to 39 in week two.
