I thought the plan would be to merge Bellevue, Dayton, and Newport in Newport high school. Maybe that isn't the plan, but I thought it was floated as a possibility.

 

That idea has been definitely tossed around. I was just stating in my opinion I see Bellevue and Dayton combining one day but not Newport. Just my personal thought.

Sorry to hear this for the Greendevils. They try very hard to make it work and have always played hard. As sad as it may seem, it's the only option they had. I also feel bad for Ludlow and any opponent Dayton had remaining, if it's true they need to forfeit the remainder of their schedule.

 

Also, the old Campbell County Superintendent, who's at Pendleton now, once said the plan was in place to merge Newport, Bellevue and Dayton and create a Campbell County North High School, but I haven't heard anything about it in a while.

Channel 12 ran a story about this on the 11:00 news last night. There aren’t plans to cancel the regular season, but many of the injuries are “day to day” so there is no timetable as to when they will play again. Apparently several are concussions. So the season hasn’t been cancelled, but it sounds like they are taking this one week at a time.

When Holy Cross played Cincinnati Country Day earlier this year, CCD had 16 players and a limited schedule.

I believe Silver Grove was to be included as well the merge.

Smart move by the Dayton staff not messing with concussions. Shows they really care about the kids not just football. I'm sure it hurt having to forfeit but better safe than sorry for the kids.

I have never understood the stubbornness of school districts, whether they are public, private, or independent to allow a school to dwindle down to nothing & not consider consolidation.

 

It stinks for the history of the school and the programs associated with those schools to combine them into a new school, but when you can salvage opportunities and experiences for kids, its ultimately worth it.

 

My school closed the year that I graduated. Gone were50+ years of history for that school. Luckily the consolidation efforts combined the school colors from both schools to carry on one part of that tradition from both schools. They decided on a new mascot which was ok that it wasn't one or the other.

 

Going back to watch games just isn't the same anymore, but there is still a little bit of the past playing in the present.

I dont think the staff has much say if a player plays with a concussion. When a player gets a concussion, a player is out now until a doctor clears them and proper return to play protocol is followed. But I definitely get what you meant.

Unfortunately, this is a reality that isn't going to stop for several smaller football programs everywhere. When I first heard of the River City Ducks program merging between Dayton and Bellevue, I thought that the chances of the high schools doing this was a good possibility. With consideration to the challenges with numbers of students coming out to play and students within the schools, I believe that the choice will eventually involve merging or no programs. This has happened with plenty of schools already. I hope that this isn't the case for Dayton, Bellevue, or anywhere else going forward, but it very well could be coming.
