Despite being ranked #2, does DeSales have a legitimate claim to #1?

  1. 1. Where does DeSales deserve to be ranked?

    • The win over St. X should put them at #1

Top ranked Mayfield beat defending Tennessee 3A champion Union City by two scores, and Christian Academy of Louisville turned in a defensive gem, stifling 5A #4 South Oldham, 21-3. But no one in 2A made a bigger statement in Week 0 than the Colts. Their stunning victory (DeSales’ first in the series since 1986) over big school heavyweight St. Xavier sent earthquake tremors spanning from 2A to 6A. Despite this, Mayfield retained the top spot in this week's BGP 2A poll. The Colts did leapfrog CAL, though. Should they have also jumped the Cards?

Not in week 0. Time will tell if its a fluke.

These rankings at this point mean nothing. DeSales has the biggest win in week 0 so why not bump them up to #1. As the weeks progress we will get a better idea of who is the real number 1.

Well said. this is where I am.

Mayfield beat a defending state champ. DeSales defeated a large class state runner up without their starting QB, and with a debuting coach. The Colts earned a hard fought victory and a leap over CAL, but even with those well deserved accolades, #2 is as far as they get this week. Rest assured, they'll see #1 at some point, especially if they knock off 6A Butler this week.

It's going to be very hard to keep them from the top spot if they handle the Bears this week.

It's going to be hard to ignore DeSales resume if they beat another heavily ranked 6A team this week...

With respect to Eastern and Hopkinsville, no 2A team would come close to that resume of victories by a longshot and looking at the schedules the only two wins that might be able rival that in the non-district slate would be if Danville could make statements against Corbin and Boyle County.

DeSales makes a great case for #1 but I don’t feel like Mayfield did anything to move them out of the top spot.

Hmmm. Xs and Os, Jimmies and Joes!!!!!! GEAUX!!!

If they beat Butler, they are absolutely #1, IMO.

If DeSales loses by a couple TD's or more to Butler, do we drop them in the standings? What if St. X also gets throttled by Bowling Green this week? Does that tell us the St. X win by DeSales was a fluke or perhaps the result of St. X losing their QB?

It is early. More evidence coming this Friday. I don't automatically jump DeSales to #1 if they beat Butler, but it will be tough for other teams to match that two week resume.

I would say they deserve to be #2 after last weeks game. Beating St. X is a bigger statement than holding South Oldham to 3 points. The good thing about this is that time will tell the significance of early season wins.

X is on bye week.

Thanks. St. X plays Bowling Green next week then right?

Yes sir.
