One could pose a question, "suppose" for the sake of argument this was pinetar....is there a difference between a pitcher using a foreign substance like pinetar and a position player, using performance enhancements.....

He was clearly cheating. MLB should suspend him the 8 games (i think this is the right number) games that this type of event calls for. He has had a substance on his hand for every game that he has pitched so far in the post season. He is cheating and should be penalized.

He pitched a great game and defeated the CArds but I think something should have been done.

 

I think LaRussa is not making a big deal about it to keep his team concentrating on the upcoming games and by not worrying about last night's loss.

I agree with you S16. I believe in his press conference, he didn't want to even have this as an issue.

I have seen coaches let controversy effect their team, I think LaRussa doing everything to not let this happen.

If you notice in the bigs a lot of pitchers, pull there cap bills down on their forehead and its just my opinion but several do, to hide any discoloration or substance, that may be on the bill.

 

Has anyone ever noticed, a pitcher who has a cap that is sweat stained....you can apply a detergent to these stains, to create a "goo" which will make the ball move. You probably have also seen bills, that appear to be soaking wet and its because they are, as a result of pitchers soaking it in water, thus when they adjust their cap the moisture goes straight to the baseball.

 

Watch Weaver pitch in his next start and see how far he pulls his cap down.....not accusing him of anything but just look at.

I think LaRussa isn't making a big deal about it because he doesn't want the spotlight on his own pitchers. It's common knowledge in the clubhouse that pitchers use everything they can to gain an advantage, whether it's sharpening the round metal holes on their glove, or putting pine tar on the handle of the mud knife, to other stuff in their hat. That aside, it had no bearing on the outcome. It would have been the same as if Pujols had took a corked bat to the plate and struck out on three pitches.

I believe it was pine tar also, but Rogers was not caught with the substance on his hand by the umpires, therefore there was nothing they could have done about it. By the time the home plate umpire approrached Rogers about it, in the top of the 2nd inning, he had already washed the stuff off his hand.

I think the fact that he cleaned it off after the first inning and went seven more innings and gave up only two more hits has to factor into the story somewhere. He might have had an illegal substance on his hand, but that doesn't take away the fact that he pitched an outstanding game.

Did not read everyone's responses, so pardon me if I duplicate someone else.

 

I think the umpires should have at least inspected the substance and his hat/hair/uniform/glove. If they found something, throw him out. If it was just a clump of dirt, tell him to wash his hands.

 

From most of the accounts that I've read, he pitched just as good afterwards as he did before, so IMO he wasn't trying to cheat.

 

But I do think he's a jerk too.

You know Rogers don't look a thing like he used to back in the '80's and '90's. All of that plastic surgery I guess. I still like "Ruby, don't take your love to town" the best. Didn't he do a song about a little boy playing baseball?
