Covington Catholic 53 Cooper 49 (9th Region Semifinals)

Why wasnt Jake Walters more involved in this game?

Did Cooper take him it out it?

Did CCH not get him the ball enough?

I would think that a 7 footer would be a difference maker especially when Cooper has no one over 6-4.

Credit Cooper D. Made it very difficult for him to receive a pass.

The T on Kunkel was a tough call. So was disallowing Frederick’s 3 on the Cooper foul call with CCH up 23-18.

Cooper didn’t lose because of the T. They had several open looks down the stretch that simply didn’t get knocked down. It happens sometimes.

Great game by both teams.

What was the score when the T was given?

Stats:

Kunkel 5/13 1/5 from3 7/7 from the line

Blaine Walters 5/8 3/3 from 3.

Fredrick 4/9 1/4 from 3 7/8 from the line

Ruthstaz 3/10 2/5 from 3 10/12 from the line

Cooper shot 17/38 from the field

CCH shot 12/30 from the field.

Two best defensive teams in the 9th.

26-22 was score when T was assessed.

Down 4 to down 8 against a great team is a huge difference.

If Frederick’s 3 would have counted at 23-18, same difference. Two tough calls. Big deal - moving on.

Was not there and could not find update thread, so please explain how the T cost Cooper 4 points. With made basket on dunk you would have CC possession. Two made T's is two and then CC possession. In my world the T only cost Cooper 2, but again maybe I missed something.

Why didn't Ruthsatz use him at all tonight? Cooper had no one who could come close to matching up with him.

I give credit to the Jags. They are not a top 5 team in the state for nothing.

1) Great defense by Cooper. The defensive pressure from the guards make it very difficult to make clean entry passes to the low post.

2) Great defense by Cooper. When Walter did get the ball down low, Cooper was quick to double team. Walter would have to come away from the basket to allow windows for entry passes. Walter is not as effective 8 feet from the basket as he is from 4.

3) Game plan. Walter was not the focal point of the offense tonight. Hard to fault the coaching staff as the game was won.

It wasn’t a dunk. He was rebounding a missed shot

What were the stats from the line for both teams. Cov Catholic getting in the bonus early in the second half was a big key in the game. Both teams were struggling to score due to the great defense being played so getting on the foul line for non shooting fouls was key.

Runion missed a layup that would’ve cut it to 2... AK hung on the rim on the put back/rebound .. CCH converted the free throws and the basket off the technical so instead of a 2 point game it was an 8 point game. Huge play!

Just a guess, (not making any excuses) was Walter sick? He came out for pregame late and after a few minutes of warming up went over and sat on the bench as his teammates continued their pregame warm up. It also appeared he was taken out a few times for defensive reasons, matchup issues on man defense.

Second the many comments about these two teams, a joy to watch them compete. The respect each team has for one another from the coaching staff down to each player is tremendous. Punk ball has no place any level, especially at the HS level. Hats off to both programs for playing the game the right way!

I had no problem with the technical. My question for any refs or rules experts is what constitutes basket interference. On the play in question, the Runion layup, it appeared that Mayer smacked the backboard. He definitely did it again a few plays after. I thought that if a shot touched the backboard, like on a layup, that you can not touch the backboard no matter if the ball is in the cylinder or not. Can anyone provide any expertise on this?
