Education Commissioner: Cordia School Unsafe; Students Must Leave

 

LOTTS CREEK, Ky. (WYMT) - Kentucky Education Commissioner Stephen Pruitt says the Cordia school building in Knott County "shall not be occupied by Knott County School District students after February 2, 2018."

 

WYMT obtained a copy of the order Thursday afternoon.

 

Pruitt says new issues continue to be identified regarding the use of the Cordia school building. That includes a leak in the fire sprinkler system.

 

Pruitt says a health and safety inspection on January 11th also revealed previous issues remain a concern. Those include animal feces in the building, structural cracks and a back-up electric generator not working.

 

The students at Cordia must be reassigned to other schools or facilities by the Knott County Board of Education and Superintendent Kim King.

I guess technically it's not a transfer...it's a reassignment.

Animal Feces in the building? Now I know why this school was so attractive to potential student athletes!

Interesting. These are all addressable issues.

 

- Sprinkler leaks can be repaired.

- Structural cracks can be repaired.

- Back-up generators can be repaired/replaced.

- Rodent infestations can be remediated.

But administrators and school boards that allow those things can't. They have to be replaced. You can have a great school in a tent. The people are what is important.

So, will Cordia's basketball players be immediately eligible to play at their new school, which I assume will be Knott Central siince it's located in the same county. That would certainly make KCC much better.

WOW... Put a 7 footer on Knott Central...

 

Or will they let Cordia finish the rest of this year? What a weird situation.

I don't disagree with you. But on the other hand, I don't see this being a permanent closure for Cordia.

Would the players wanna go to Knott Central or somewhere else? Would KHSAA allow them to play immediately or ineligible?

Surely they would. I can imagine punishing students/athletes for their school shutting down. The kids didn't do anything wrong.

Just a guess but since Knott County Central and Cordia are in the same public school districts I would assume that the players would only be eligible at Knott County Central. They're closing down a county system and moving their students to the only other county system.

Depending on what it is that we're talking about, yes. There are a WIDE arrange of things that can be called "structural damage" though.

Or they just let them continue to play as Cordia the rest of this season.
