What do you think about fruitcake (and I'm not talking about Getslow either)?

As a kid the only exposure I had to it was some cheap canned nasty stuff that I pretty much thought was disgusting. For a change it was one dessert that my parents didn't have to worry about me trying to completely devour. Years later I've tried an assortment of other varieties, and some of them truly rocked, and HELL YES to the ones soaked in rum. :ylsuper:

The only fruit cake I've ever liked was the one my mother made and it wasn't really a cake. She basically took shelled walnuts, added some candied fruit to them, put something in to hold it all together, and baked the mixture in loaf pans. It ended up being walnut loaves. No cake to it at all.

Pre-packaged mass-produced fruitbricks? Absolutely not.

 

Grandma’s handmade Stollen on Christmas morning? Yes please.

Home made is fantastic. There are a couple bakeries around Cincinnati that also do them well.

When little, we would always get one from Gethsemani Farms (Trappist monks in Ky). They used to be the only type that I thought were any good. Haven't had one in years.

About 15 yrs ago someone gave a gf of mine a fruit cake from Neiman Marcus. She hated fruit cake, so old Mikey here took it home. It was incredibly good. I was surprised I liked it so well. It was very moist, fresh, very yummy. I just looked online at their traditional 2lb. fruit cake. It's sold out! Looks like no Neiman Marcus for me this year.
