December 17, 20178 yr I wonder if it was a "hey, we'll give you the chance to leave on your own or you'll be fired" type deal. I believe Marvin is smart enough to see where things are. He talks on a regular, perhaps even daily, basis to Mike Brown and the front office leadership. I am sure in those weekly/daily discussions it became clear to everyone that the time for new leadership has arrived.

So I think they will end up with a guy who has been a head coach before at two places and has failed but imo would be desperate to have one more shot and does have some ties to Marvin. That guys name is Rex Ryan lol. I'm not saying I would be happy with that, but I could truly see that happening after we miss out on a couple other targets.
December 18, 20178 yr Could we have seen the next Bengals head coach on the opposite sideline yesterday? Not talking about Zimmer, though. Just wondering if the Vikings make a deep run in the playoffs, I'd think Pat Shurmur will get some looks again. Granted his past record wasn't that great, but it was with the Browns. (And compared to what Hue Jackson's done lately, it makess Shurmur look like Vince Lombardi.) Just a thought.

I think he’d bring the accountability factor a lot of people feel the Bengals need. I’m hoping for an entirely new staff next year.

But it doesnt matter because he is getting paid either way. So the for the fans that still (IMO insanely drop way to much for a garbage product) go to the games you better hope they hire the right guy. Whoever that may be.

Now the last 2 years I have only been to 3 and one of them I went for free. 6 out of the last 9 years they have not been a garbage product at all and was definitely worth going imo. With that said I completely agree the next hire will determine if the stadium is half empty or not.
December 19, 20178 yr I dont think I saw his name mentioned, but I'll throw it out there. How about Bill Cowher? He's everything I want in a head coach. He's been out long enough to recharge the batteries for another 8-10 year run, and I dont think Tomlin is going to leave the Steelers anytime soon.

I know this in the agreement at the beginning, but I don't know if it timed out after a certain number of years. If he still is guaranteed a sellout every game, why put out a better product?

I don't get how some of you all can still use the same narrative from the 90s, that they don't try to put a better product out. The biggest mistake was not getting rid of Marvin a few years ago, and imo believing in Dalton. In terms of players the Bengals were widely regarded as one of the most talented teams in football for a 4 year stretch between 2012 and 2015. That is not putting a bad product on the field. People act like all teams stay good every year but simply is not true. So once the Bengals start doing bad people go back to the narrative of the 90s. It's simple though they had a window and they didn't take advantage, and they actually started a rebuild these last 2 years getting younger on defense, and trying to add more skill on offense. What killed them is their two young tackles not panning out. Sorry for the rant I just get tired of the rant that they don't try to put a good product out. Imo they did for 4 straight years, window closed and they been rebuilding in key spots the last 2 years. His biggest mistake was believing in Lewis and Dalton. That's my only complaint. Other than that I still have zero problem with them not offering the huge deal the Rams did. Because he wouldn't have made this a playoff team. It still would have been a bad team, and people would have then complained that they were stupid signing a huge deal to a 36 year old tackle who wouldn't have made this team a playoff team anyways.

Yet act like all these other nfl teams do everything right. The Bengals have actually modeled themselves these last 6 years after how both the Steelers and Packers do things and those are two of the most consistent franchises in NFL history. Both those teams rarely do much in free agency, both teams don't make many changes even with coaches. Which this model helped put together one of the most talented teams in the NFL for a 4 year stretch. Now the difference is the Packers Steelers also have true elite qbs to go along with it. While the Bengals don't have that at qb. Their qbs can make plays to help win a game or change momentum when things are going bad. They both make plays out of nothing. That's the biggest difference imo. Imo Tomlin is not that much better of a coach than Marvin. Tomlin also makes a lot of stupid in game decisions and not great with time management either. However he has a top qb so that can help overcome that. Now that hurts them when they play other top qb with a top coach like the Patriots who they struggle with. Top qbs can make average coaches look even better. Which is the difference between Marvin and Tomlin. The way the Bengals are doing things is not bad. Imo they have already put some pieces together in this unofficial rebuild. To where if they get the right coach and some better o lineman. That they can start winning again next year. Now I am not sure if they could go all the way if Dalton is still the qb. But they could get back to a playoff team.
