I think the matchups and the cross bracketing played a big part too. I don't think you'd get the same crowd if it was Boyle vs Central. Most years Cov Cath and Madison Southern would meet before the championship, so in Mad South you had a local first time state participant = big crowd. UK is the best place for it though period. I'd put it at EKU before WKU or UL.

4A had the same 2 teams from last year. Attendance was higher at Lexington over Bowling Green. Not by much but still it was higher.

I also will add the Kentucky basketball game was on during this game as well.

Up significantly in lexington. Why? Because it's a town more folks want to travel to and more hotel rooms for folks to stay in who want to watch all of the games. Also a better facility for the games. What a terrific weekend.

I thought the game was in Lexington, casual fans with tickets to the bb game would not go to a hs fb game that they also care nothing about. JMHO

Probably not for the teams participating, but I can see some casual local people making the decision to stay home and watch UK (or the SEC Championship) then head over to Commonwealth for the later game (CovCath/Madison Southern). I doubt it had much effect, but there could be some that made that choice.

I like EKU as a place also. However there are two concerns.

1. Doubt enough hotel rooms in Richmond. Some would have to stay in Lexington.

2. If it’s still the same when I went there the visitor side is bleachers and small at that. Both fan bases would probably have to sit on one side.

EKU actually has a really nice visitors? side now, I believe it was completed this year. So you probably wouldn't have to use the upper level. 2 Newer hotels, and is only a 25 minute drive from Hamburg if more hotels were needed. EKU/Richmond has changed alot in the past 5 years.

Eastern can't promise availability that weekend because of the second round of the FCS playoffs. EKU hasn't been good in some while but if they were to make it back to the top they'd potentially host a game that Saturday, something the KHSAA obviously wants to avoid.

 

As of right now, UK and Louisville are the only schools that can absolutely guarantee there will be no games on their field the first weekend in December.

These sites are chosen through a bid process. UK and WKU were the only ones that put in a bid. You can't pick a place that doesn't have an interest.

 

I am willing to bet, though, that Lexington couldn't match Bowling Green in hotel prices. When our team went a couple years ago, KHSAA gave our team hotel to us for $52/night. No way you can get that in Lexington without staying in a hotel where you have to keep one eye open all night.

Short answer is yes, haha. For what it's worth, I was actually in Lexington during the JC/FS game, but I was at Rupp Arena rather than Kroger Field. Had my Tomcat's been playing, I would have went to the 4A game. So I guess as others have mentioned, the UK game as well as the conference championships could have kept some of the casual fans that would have went either at home watching their tv's or at the UK basketball game.
