November 22, 20178 yr For a few years now we have bought ready made pumpkin pie instead of making one ourselves for our Thanksgiving dinner. We have always purchased Frisch's pumpkin pie because I thought it tasted best. However, the last two years Frisch's pie really hasn't been up to the standards of past pies. I just wonder if they are cutting corners on the recipe nowadays. Maybe some BGPers can suggest other ready made pumpkin pies that are pretty good. By the way, latest pie test was Meijer brand pie, it was way too sweet.
November 22, 20178 yr I will second Costco. Very good quality and as close to homemade as you will get in a store.
November 22, 20178 yr Walmart used to sell an oversized pie this time of year in the bakery...it had a great pumpkin taste to it. My biggest complaint are the pies that look good but have no taste to them. Kroger bakery has a good pumpkin pie also.
November 22, 20178 yr Author Costco for the win. I will second Costco. Very good quality and as close to homemade as you will get in a store. We tried Costco as well last year and the pie just wasn't that good. As a matter of fact, it had a faint moldy taste. I was surprised since most other bakery items we have gotten were real good.

I was surprised since most other bakery items we have gotten were real good. That's odd. I've never gotten anything bad from Costco. But I wouldn't go back either if I had one bad experience with it.

Not sure what Frischs Olddog has been getting his pumpkin pie from, but here in Frankfort it is a tasty as ever and better than most homemade pumpkin pies I have tried...and I don't say that about any other pie, homemade pies being my favorite dessert.

If so then I'm at a loss because nothing is worse than buying a whole pie and taking one bite and knowing immediately that it's just not gonna do. Though I shop at Kroger, I second that theirs has always sucked.

I'm going to assume Frisch's pies are still made at it's commissary in Cincinnati but I'm not sure since the Frisch family sold their restaurants a couple years ago. Again, I've noticed a difference the last couple of years or could be my aging taste buds are having issues.
November 23, 20178 yr Author Had a really good one from Bob Evans a couple years ago. Bob's are kind of pricey but I'm going to try one.
November 23, 20178 yr This is a trick question.....there is no good pumpkin pie. Pumpkin might be my least favorite food aside from liver.
November 23, 20178 yr From the freezer case - Marie Callender's, hands down. If you live in an area where there are Publix supermarkets, their in store bakeries are outstanding. Many a southern belle has passed off Publix baked goods as "homemade." :sneaky: :smug:
