I'd imagine the DeSales coaches want their kids on the opposite side of the field, away from the chaos that comes with bleachers. I don't think it has anything to do with whether it is a regular season or playoff game.

True, but to expect a team to change from regular season to postseason isn't very likely. And if they did switch sides, CAL had the last two sections of the bleachers and would have been right behind the DeSales players throughout the game.

 

Bottom line, stadiums are better when there are bleachers on both sides. Having said that, tonight was my first trip to DeSales for a game and it is an awesome stadium. Very impressive facilities!

I'm not going out on a limb here when I say the game completely changed on two plays late in the second quarter:

 

1. DeSales chose to go for a touchdown on 4th & Goal from the five yard line with about two minutes left. They hadn't really moved the ball that well although they had gotten close while their kicker had already made one field goal. The distance of the potential kick would have basically been an extra point. CAL batted the ball down and took over on downs.

 

2. After holding CAL on a 3rd & 13 deep in their own territory on the ensuing drive, DeSales picked up an insanely terrible personal foul penalty that gave CAL a first down. CAL hit Wright for the deep score a couple of plays later.

 

The game should have been 6-0 DeSales going into the half, with perhaps a chance to score again after stopping CAL on third down, but instead it ended up 7-3 CAL with all of the momentum going to the break.

CAL is 2-0 in that stadium.

DeSales lost their best RB early in the first quarter, and their QB early in the third, but it was because CAL was popping them. They played extremely physical football, and they have a sophomore lineman who was pancaking people over and over. I learned after the game that he got an offer from UL today. He's just a sophomore. I said on one thread that somebody would have to bring it to beat the Colts. CAL brought it, and then some.

GCHS - your observations are spot on. The game did indeed change on the plays you mentioned. After Wright returned the second half kickoff, DeSales was toast. If they weren't they definitely were shortly after that when the QB got hurt on the following series. You are correct about the stadium - exactly. Coach Davis does not want the Colts in front of the bleachers. Every game for two seasons has been the same set-up. And yes, Wright is a junior!
