Church Shooting in San Antonio, TX; Multiple Fatalities, Shooter Dead

Please educate me. Did the previous ban prevent the purchase of hunting rifles?

That is why I am asking the question - why shouldn't semi-automatic weapons be banned like they were in 1994-2004?

See if you can tell me the difference in these two rifles.

Haven't we had 100+ during that period to some of the other countries' couple.

I know Norway had one.

Then no problem with putting that ban back in place?

There is a problem if the people wanting the ban never understood it to begin with and seemingly still don't.

...and here we go, the gun debate. Nobody will change their perspective and support their own views with statistics that support that. Nothing new here.

Bottom line with guns, NRA and their $$ keep all type of guns in people's hands and always will. It doesn't matter if they are right or wrong. They control this issue with $$ and legislative jobs.

So people are going to have all kinds of guns, legally and illegally. It isn't going to change, so these things will keep happening with guns. With cars. With whatever people think of next (chemicals, viruses, etc.)

The thread has gotten away from RTS's question. There is no one answer or solution,. I think we all know that. But we can't take things off the table to discuss or legislate because of $$, but we do and will.

So let's just say everybody can have any type of gun they want, knowing that, what do we do now? What I envision is probably different than what others envision with that scenario.

I would like to see a bipartisan (which I don't think there is anymore) group take a comprehensive look at the issue.

If we refuse to learn from what other countries have done to have less of any type of violence, then we have become learned. An extremely dangerous position. But I am afraid we have been fooled to believe we are a learned society in our beliefs on all sides. Thus we cannot discuss this issue or any other anymore without hatred spewing forth. Because our society has become learned and not willing to listen another view. All or nothing is also an extremely path to take. But we are way down that path and we are messed up.

We agree more than you may think. It's $$ on both sides, just different agendas. We are messed up. We don't want all the warts. We just want a Band-aide.

I can! They shoot the same round, but one has a nice wood finished stock.

It should also be understood that Mass Shootings for statistical matters is any shooting where 4 or more people were injured. So if the Hell's Angles drive by and hit 4 Mongrels standing in front of their clubhouse with pellets from one shotgun blast and no one dies that still counts as a mass shooting. By definition there have been over 130 of those this year.

Top Mass Shootings this year

Las Vegas (59)

Texas Church (26)

Plano Texas (Man opens fire at a Cowboys Watch Party held by his wife) (9) Pistol

Mississippi (Domestic Violence) (8)

Orlando (Drunk Co-Worker) (6) Pistol

New Mexico (Domestic Violence and Car Jacking) (5) Pistol and Rifle

The rest are similar in nature with 3 more have 5 victims killed, 12 having 4 killed and the rest having 3 or less.

We here MASS SHOOTINGS and automatically we think about the worst of the worst, but random attacks like Vegas or Texas today are still VERY VERY rare and most "Mass Shootings" are a mixture of crimes for a variety of reasons.

Guy get's drunk and shoots 4 people it counts as a Mass Shooting, even if he only wounds them. We have very few that have high casualties (more than 5) that most think of when they here Mass Shooting. Mass Shooting has become a term thrown around to promote an agenda.

Umm...before 1994 you could buy the bottom one for less that $200!!!

So we count ours that way but they don't?

EU had another 53 dead, 169 injured in 2016. Remember in all of this that most of the EU has complete gun control, as in you aren't allowed to own one.

Semi Auto Firearms weren't banned, you could still buy them...in my previous job I sold 1000's during that time frame. You just couldn't buy black scary looking guns during that period.

I have no idea how they count theirs, I'm just saying 4 is the number used here. Four injured or killed counts as a mass shooting as far as they way the data is collected here. You ask 20 people how many people are shot in 95% of US mass shootings and they will say 10,20,30 when in fact the number is closer to 4 or 5 with 2 deaths on average. Looking at the data a lot of those are Domestic Violence cases where husband or wife goes off and decides to shoot the family.

JD, I believe the ban only discontinued the manufacturers from producing those guns for civilian use. The firearms that were already on the market could be bought or sold by citizens who legally qualified. Correct me if I’m wrong.

A little food for thought. We are all outraged (as we should be) by this senseless act of cowardice and violence, hence the thread and the dialogue. Yet, this year alone in the city of Chicago to date we have had 557 shot and killed and 2639 shot and wounded and no threads, no debate, no outrage. Let that sink in for a minute or so.

True, there was never a ban on owning or selling semi automatic firearms. There has been a very restrictive ban on Full Auto for many years and that sometimes confuses people.
