Agree 100%. Then the first couple rounds of the playoffs would be watchable.

The number of classes isn't about the number of schools, it is about the size differences among the schools. Reducing the number of classes only exacerbates that problem.

All the "too many trophies" and "playoff quality" talk is about fans, not kids, IMO.

 

Is 6 too much? Maybe. I think the 4 is too few, though. There would be too much discrepancy in size from the top to bottom of classes. You would still have blowouts. Of course the real elephant in the room is geographic balance... I think it is going to get harder and harder to maintain geographic balance in the state. Not sure how that affects classification one way or another, but it is a reality.

Classes were added to get as many teams away from Trinity/X as possible. They then jimmied with cross bracketing every two years to put Trinity/X in the same half of the 6A bracket. This guarantees at least a runner up for large school publics every two years. SK and Ryle were able to add a runner up to the trophy case in years they probably weren't the second best team in the state.

THS 2011 no doubt we should have only 4 classes. This skewed logic, all started back in little league, everyone plays in the field, and bats once. Then this mentality only expanded from there. The worst thing ever, are participation trophies !

I still think it should be just like basketball. If those kids get a chance to play for 1 overall champion and everyone makes the playoff then why shouldn't the football kids get the same opportunity. I can't wait for that first round Trinity vs. Shawnee playoff game.

Just a little hyperbole. Participation trophies have zero to do with the state classification system, and probably aren't in the top 1000 of the worst things ever list.

Does it matter who Trinity plays in the first round?? Unless you fast forward to maybe the regional final, none of Trinity's playoff games are going to be close. And how does adding another 15-20 much smaller schools to Trinity's class make their class more competitive?

wWith that said, why in the world would the KHSAA change it now and reduce the revenue they generate? Especially after coming to an agreement with UK... you know UK/Lexington would not be happy with reducing the number of teams and subsequent fans (and subsequent dollars spent).

 

Folks we should have never went to 6-classes, but now that we are here... it is going to stick.

 

Sadly, you probably have more chance of seeing an additional class added more than you would ever see the number of classes reduced.

Instead of worrying about how to reduce the number of classes, the bigger concern should be how can we maximize the level of competition of the playoffs.

This is not going to be fixed by reducing classes. There are quite frankly a few really good teams and many, many average teams and worse in the state of Kentucky. Reducing classes won't make the average or bad teams any better. All reducing classes will do is set up more games of those average smaller school teams playing far bigger schools in the playoffs. It may make regional final/state final games a little more competitive, but as whole it's not going to fix early round blowouts. And in the regular season, it will create more mismatches as it will increase the number of bad district games teams are forced to play. Is forcing Trinity, St X or any of the power schools to play more of the smaller schools in district play a good thing or what we want??

Too many classes, but like ATLCAT said you'll have a 2.5A before they reduce.

The state population just doesn't support 6 classes. Geography doesn't help as the bulk of the people live in a few areas. To me the issue is only a few teams out of the hundreds that play have a football program. Many have great teams in a given era that doesn't last long beyond a group of kids (3-6 years).

 

If you're tired of the privates or independents dominating... get better! This is way easier said than done. If you separate publics then the same few public schools would continue to win.

 

Nobody wants to see a team travel 2-3 hours for a blowout win or loss. The weaker team suffers demoralizing defeats that could prevent program growth. The stronger team risks injury to key players in meaningless action.
