W.Va running back runs for 658 yards in one game.

Featured Replies

Yes, it was last year in the playoffs, and the kid ran for 5 TDs and threw for 5 TDs. The score wasn't 60-0, I think it was about a 2-3 TD game.

Totally different than the WV back running all over an obviously weak team.

Thank You, I just remembered him being involved in 10 touchdowns and alot of yards. I wasn't really trying to compare the two, that just kind of jarred my memory a little bit. ;)

If the kid could rush for that many yards, and he could'nt start for many E. Ky schools as some suggested, would it have made a difference if another kid was put in and ran the ball? Apparenttly they could'nt stop him, so why would they stop another kid? The 10 touchdowns would have probably been scored and the 600 yards would have been spread out among 2 or 3 kids, but it would still be 10 tds and 600 yards. Plus, if the kid was in that much, he had to be tired and they still could'nt stop him. If the stats were there, did it really matter if it was one kid or a dozen. A lot of schools still run up the score against Pineville, McCreary, Thomas Walker, et al, here.

You have to understand that Yogi Kinder would have let him rush for 2 million yards it possible. Yogi is all about himself and stats. Matewan could not beat one fourth of the teams in Ky's class 1A and 2A.

Bottom line is that Kinder wanted this and he got it. Just hope someone will return the favor.

It usually does come back around, sooner or later.

Ive heard it a lot in this thread, and although true Burch is very weak this year in Coalfield A, WV, this is still the same guy, Paul McCoy, who ran for 595 against Shelby Valley in the Shorty Jammerson Grid. I know Matewan had to forefeit the win, so I am assuming that this mark had to be forefitted too? None the less, this was one thing that was going to stand out to me this season was McCoys 595 being erased, but now that he went on to post 658, I guess that will no longer be a concern.

Again, yes, Burch is a weak team, but it wasn't like McCoy was just piling up yards due to the competition, the kid can run, and has proved that all season long.

Just to correct your stats, McCoy only ran for 440 yards against SV. I did not go back an check, but I think he had like 554 alpurpose yards.

Never the less, I heard this young man on a radio talk show, and he seemed to be a good young man. He pointed out that he did not know why Kinder left him in. Kinder stated that he done it for the boy's recognition.

I do not agree with those who stated that this boy would not start at our two elite Pike County programs... he would start, he has more heart than most (except D. Harman, who is going to be the man in this area the next couple of years). He ran on SV because he was the only thing Matewan had for SV. They only beat Valley by 5, 48-43. McCoy scored 36 of his teams points. He runs hard!

He deserves more than Kinder! I would have loved to have seen him on a Pike County team... anyone of them.

He would start at Belfry.

He'd be 3rd string to May and Chapman, as far as carries go, but he would start.

I understand where the majority of people are coming from, but this is a lose-lose situation for everyone.

Are you supposed to tell the kid to just fall down if somebody gets close? Should the QB just snap the ball and take a knee?

There are quite a few posters on here who are saying that this RB would not start for quite a few teams in EKY. If he's not that good, why should the coach have to take him out? Honestly, it's just a lose lose situation for everyone involved...

How do you prevent something like this? I don't know that you can, as long as the other team stays on the field...

I know you are not trying to defend the coach and I am not trying to single you out, but take a look at the article that I am linking to and see if your opinion is changed at all.

Coach runs up score.

Hunt felt confused when McCoy ran onto the field to start the second half. Livid when Matewan started to run a no-huddle offense in the third quarter with a 35-point lead.

Hunt's team hadn't scored against Matewan in seven years. But never had Burch suffered this sort of embarrassment.

I can see where you are coming from and agree that you can't ask players to take a knee for a whole half, but continue to run a no huddle offense? I see no possible way to rationalize this behavior.

I don't fault the kid one bit, the coach on the other hand should be more responsible. It would have been different if it would have been a closer game but to run the no huddle up by 40 in the 2nd half and on top of that not returning punts to tack on extra rushing yardage, that's below bush league.

Does anybody else remember this or did I just dream it? I thought it was a couple years ago?

It was Daniel Pugh from Paintsville. Don't recall all his stats but he had around 300 rushing and 250 passing and 6 or 7 touchdowns. I believe that it was the 2 years ago when this happened.

Anyone have exact stats or the team it came against?

I don't believe anyone has mentioned the controversial new Connecticut rule against "running up the score" and sanctioning coaches. Doesn't sound as bad when viewed in perspective of this mess. Coaches were to be sanctioned, etc. in Connecticut were they not?

In a situation like this, I'm glad I wasn't the ref. Because if I was, there would have been a lot of mysterious holding calls that knocked off some of his yardage and a few of his touchdowns. I am not advocating cheating in order to win, don't get me wrong. I am not even advocating cheating to keep a score close. However, when some nut jobs get a pretty good team on their hands it seems like they want to beat people like this and crush other kids hopes. This will come back to haunt this coach in the long run in many ways...

Sad thing is this is not even that great of a team! Matewan is going to miss the playoffs this season and last week were defeated by perennial cellar dwellar Tug Valley. Kinder has won a state title before and Matewan was a powerhouse in the early 90's... but this team is average at best. He just genuinely ran the score up for the heck of it really.

Wouldnt it be more embarassing to play against someones 2nd team or 3rd team?
