I have never paid attention to the spellings, and I have met a male named Skylar (or "e", who knows), but I've met more females and definitely default that way.

One of the guys on Warren Central's basketball team is named Skyelar (slightly different spelling), which is why I went dude. Immediately after I thought of two females - Skylar Grey (real singer) and Skyler White (fictional wife on Breaking Bad). Oh well.

Skylar or Skyler is a unisex given name, a spelling variant of Schuyler.

Only skyler I have heard of was in Breaking Bad so I'm going with girl.
