June 23, 20179 yr So I guess I'm that guy, even though I'm an assistant. I really feel bad for being mouthy when it's apparent the opposing coach knew his stuff and our crew did not.
June 23, 20179 yr I am really bothered by the behavior of adults(coaches, and especially parents) that I see at youth sporting events. Just awful. The kids behave so much better than the adults in most cases.
June 23, 20179 yr I have witnessed some nutjobs over the past 15 yrs watching my sons play but the best was at Hilltop in Newport. A coach got in the face of our coach as they were discussing a controversial call at home plate with the teenage umpire. These are 5th grade boys mind you and it got to the point where the guy threatened our coach. They tossed the coach from the game, I am not sure who did because the teenage umpire looked like he saw a ghost. O think there was a league official in the crowd. But the guy who was tossed walks up the steps to the top of the hill and proceeds to stand at the top of the hill yelling at the opposing coach over the next 2 innings. Parents of his team are also yelling, it was embarrassing. All I kept thinking was I wonder what those kids on the field are thinking. I believe the Newport police were finally called and he was removed but man that was crazy.

The kids behave so much better than the adults in most cases. They're ruining sports, and they're the reason there is a shortage of umpires and referees. No one wants to put up with it. When I fill my rosters, I fill them based on the parent first, and then the kid. I'll pass on a kid that is a stud if mom and dad are a problem. I want a kid that wants to be there, regardless of skill level, with parents that are positive and supportive.

In my neck of the woods 3 or 4 dads, who had the best daughters all got together and decide they would all be coaches, so their daughters could all be on the same team. Being they were so called big name dads they were allowed to do this and of course their stacked team won.

Most leagues I'm familiar with only allow 2 players to be "locked" to the team...most always coaches sons. And usually a couple of dad's get together for each team to coach and usually their kids are some of the better players, though not always. The rest of the kids on each team are then drafted. Any more than that and the league runs the danger of getting a much stronger team than anyone else right out of the gate. That CAN happen anyway through the draft but there is less of a chance of it. A league should not allow a team to bring 4 kids to a team like that, it automatically creates a greatly unbalanced league. That's a bad league oversight that should be corrected.
June 24, 20179 yr Author In our league, a mom was named assistant coach so that her son could be put on the roster. The mom hasn't coached a single minute of the season and actually sits with the other fans during games. Bush league.
June 26, 20179 yr He pitches EVERY game and I know he has gone over the pitch limit. There are limits and rest periods that are supposed to be followed. Where are the people who are suppose to be running the league? It sounds like they need to be replaced.
