Pit Bulls Killed 3-week old infant in Michigan

Featured Replies

If you don't know how to raise your dog, no matter the breed, you are doing a disservice not only to you but those around you. Again, it's 100% on the owners for not living up to their duties when taking on the responsibility of raising a Pit Bull. Pit Bulls are high maintenance with regards to training and the continued learning never stops until the dog passes. That's just how it is. If you can't handle that don't get a Pit Bull. It's simple.
So you have to constantly train a Pitbull not to attack and kill someone?

I'm not sure what you mean with the embolden portion of my post and your comment that it applies to literally any breed. If you mean they are fine if raised right I just don't agree. Again the numbers just simply do not support that.

And Rottweilers are stronger yet Pits have over 200 more kills in the last 12 years than Rottweilers. 254 versus 43

As a matter of fact there are several dogs that are stronger yet none come even remotely close to the number deadly attacks.

I meant that you could raise any breed the right way and still not guarantee it to be perfectly safe.

As for your numbers, how many pit bulls are owned versus the other breeds?

I don't disagree with your first point. As i stated, no matter the breed, you never leave a child alone with a dog, especially a small child.

As far as the numbers, according to AKC's website in 2016, the American Stafford-shire Terrier and the Stafford-shire Bull Terrier ranked 81st and 82nd on the list. They are listed as separate sub groups but are typically both considered pitbulls.

German Shepard's are 2 and Rottweilers are 8th.

It didn't have numbers of dogs that I could find, just rankings based on the number of registrations with AKC.

This is one of those polarizing topics that neither side is going to budge on. Some blame the breed, some blame the owner, and both sides will continue to believe their way is correct.

Nope you train them to be comfortable in different environments. Pit Bulls don't just have this urge to attack people. They do it out of fear, not rage.

That is true with just about every domesticated dog breed you can think of and no other breed has killed close to the number of people as pit bull in recent years. Sorry but every pit bull attack is not a result of fear, nor is every dog attack period a result of fear.

Yep. And the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

An article I read mentioned that the biggest problem with Pit Bulls is not so much their tendency to bite, because their tendency to bite while higher than other breeds, is not drastically higher than other breeds. The problem with Pits is that they generally don't stop biting where other dogs stop after the first bite or two which scares you away from them.

In other words, most dogs when in pain or in fear will bite but almost always stop after that bite or two assuming you back away from them. Pits, for whatever reason keep attacking until severe injury or death. The article assumed it the breeding of the animal is probably the result.

What multiplies the issue is that Pits are the favorite breed of Red Necks and the wannabe gangstas. Two groups that shouldn't even own a gerbil much less a pit bull.

You can substantially reduce this risk by introducing your dog to a variety of different stimuli and environments at a young age. Yes Pit Bulls are stronger and have a tendency to act on their impulses more than other breeds, but it all starts with the owners. Ignorance about how to properly train and maintain a healthy relationship with your Pit Bull is not an excuse. There are plenty of lower maintainence dog options out there. Ultimately it was the owners choice to take on the responsibility.

Yep. This is another reason for the bad reputation.

Bottom Line: do some research into the breed of ANY dog you choose to own. Each breed and each individual dog is different and you must understand their nature before trying to build a healthy relationship between you and the dog.

This.

This.

But, this begs the question, why are they the favorite breeds of these two groups? Is it because Red Necks and Wannabe Gangstas are attracted to such an aggressive breed?

Because this doesn't offer much street cred?
