About half of the 152 fatal accidents the USA TODAY Network and AP examined led to criminal charges, usually against parents who the authorities said should have been watching their children more closely or secured their guns more carefully. Only about half of the people convicted of a crime ended up in prison or jail; when they did, the typical sentence was around four years.

 

There was no clear pattern for charging responsible adults or gun owners, the exception being cases that involved people who had previously been convicted of felonies and were prohibited from having a gun — as in four of the six cases in Detroit.

 

In Detroit, a city that has struggled for decades with some of the nation’s highest violent crime rates, prosecutors have drawn a harder line.

Good for a Detroit. Good article, too. I read it all. What stood out to me is that this type of punishment is extremely rare. Also, even in Detroit, if there is any attempt to make it more difficult to get the weapon, there are no charges (an example being the dad with the loaded weapon on a closet shelf, even though there had been another incident just two weeks prior.) Also, many of those that were charged were convicted felons who weren't supposed to have a weapon anyway. It's a start.

For the record I wouldn't be calling for ban of guns and I don't support the ban of dog breeds.

Guns don't kill people. People shooting guns kill people. The guns don't hunt people down and kill them.

Gotcha. To me it came off more as quit worrying about a few deaths by dogs because there a bigger fish to fry. In reality we can address all of them. And I disagree with your post that there might be laws covering those things but they aren't enforced.

1. If you own a gun, you can lock it up and be vigilant that no one goes near it.

2. If you own a pool, you can put up a tall fence, you can learn CPR shd other life saving skills. and always be vigilant if children are near it.

3. If you own a car and have kids, you can post up notes, put an alarm on your phone, keep the child's shoe on your lap while driving, all so that you don't forget that there is a child in the back when you get to your destination.

 

It's the unpredictability of the larger dogs, and mainly pit bulls, that I find absolutely terrifying!!!!!

 

If the dog goes into attack mode--can the well meaning owner restrain it? Can the well meaning owner outrun it? Can the well meaning owner pull it off the victim?

For the pit bull owners, what attracted you to owning one? There are so many other options out there I'm curious why own a pit bull?

 

Because I see how many are put down in shelters across the country every day because of the stigma surrounding them when the vast, vast majority (99.9999999%) of them are terrific pets. Because I use my two as ambassadors for the breed so people can see that they are loving animals. Because they are loyal and extremely affectionate.
