???Because it's normal for a domesticated, house trained pet to maul a baby?
Negligence on the side of the parents. 1) There is no way a properly trained pet should never act like this. 2) You should never leave an infant by themselves, especially with a dog. The dog doesn't even have to be vicious to hurt the child. It could just be wanting to play or get the child attention and knock them over.

I'm no fan of Pit Bulls and I've had the misfortune of witnessing a former neighbor's pit bull attack a child. But there are many, many incredible Pit Bulls out there. All dogs have the capability to attack, and injure. Labs kill a few people every year and are statistically one of the most dangerous dogs, yet they are universally loved. Too often Pits are owned by people enthralled with having a "scary dog" and aren't properly trained or socialized or have been bred to fight. Basically too many knucklehead owners and irresponsible breeding. Really no young Child should ever be left alone with any dog.

I wouldn't leave my 3 year old grandson alone with my Shih-tzu. This is on the parents. Not the dog. It's always easier to blame the dog with the stigma than it is to blame the people who 1.) trained the dog and 2.) left the dog unsupervised with a 3 week old baby.

This. I was always nervous whenever my 5 and 7 year old nieces and nephews would come down because of our 12 lb maltipoo. He was gentle as could be and great with kids, but he also was very hyper and you just never know what can happen if one of them accidentally steps on him or playfully grabs his tail, etc.

Leaving a child of any age alone with any dog is just stupid and all on the parents/adults.

I was watching one of those shows about bad dogs....might have been the Dog Whisperer or something similar. Anyway, one of the dogs was characterized as hard to control, and hyper and sometimes not so patient with the kids of the family who were between roughly 8-10 years old. They did a hidden camera, and captured some of the interaction between the kids and dogs when they were alone. And the kids were just bugging the crap out of the dog. Obviously, a 3 week old, like in the case we are talking about, doesn't have the capacity to do that and that's not why this attack happened. But kids don't understand that you can't play with dogs like they are humans, and often the dogs end up attacking out of frustration of how young kids treat them. The point is, that you shouldn't leave young kids alone with dogs, and you need to teach them how to play with and interact with dogs.

What about "God's Will"? You think it's OK to leave a 6 year old alone in a running car at 1:30 AM but now this one is on the parents?

Both parents made horrible decisions.

Exactly. Some of the sweetest dogs I know are pit bulls. But they are a dangerous breed if you are ignorant to how to handle them. It's the same for any dog breed. Before you get any new dog you need to do research on how to properly train them and how to treat them based on their breed. I have a husky mix and certain things like not leaving her outside for more than a few hours at a time during the summer is something that a lot of people don't think about.

My daughter loved her German Shepherd and Boxer-Rottweiler mix. They were (we lost the B-R last year) great dogs, but when she had two little girls within 1 1/2 years, several things happened: she couldn't get the dogs the exercise they need; she couldn't give them the attention they were used to; and the dogs were not used to little noisy, squeaky things they couldn't chew on. My daughter was concerned about safety, thus, the dogs ended up on my farm, and the granddaughters are safe, the dogs are happy, and my daughter gets to see the German Shepherd when she is home.

It's still God's will. No way around that. I also said I want to know more to the story as to why she left her kid in the car at 1:30am. I'd leave my sleeping grandson in a running car at 1:30 am for plenty of reasons. I'd never leave my grandson alone unsupervised with my Shih-tzu for any reason let alone Siberian Huskies or a pit bulls.

Your gotcha moment failed but I admire your desire to achieve that gotcha moment. I was waiting for you as soon as I hit submit.

2 bad decisions and now 2 dead kids. Accountability.

I have a pit mix and a boxer mix and a 17 month old. I have no worries with them. With that being said, my dogs are hyper and like to play so I don't leave them alone in a room ever

A child should never be left alone with a dog...any dog, ever.

In 2016, there were 31 dog bite fatalities in the United States. Pit bulls were involved in twenty-two (22) of these, accounting for 71% of the fatalities. To put this in perspective, pit bulls account for roughly 6% of the US Dog population.

Over the last 12 years (2005 to 2016), there were 392 Americans who were killed as a result of a dog attack. Pit bulls contributed to 254 of those deaths, which is 64.8%. Rottweilers are in 2nd place with 43 deaths (roughly 11%).

The next closest is German Shepherd with 15 deaths over the 12 year period. American bulldog (14), Mixed-breeds (13), Mastiff (12), Husky (12) and unknown breeds (12) were also identified.

As I stated earlier in this thread, the dog itself is not wholly responsible. These types of incidents are typically the result of several different mistakes. But it happens to pit bulls way, way more than any other breed. You may think that is a coincidence -- I do not.
