Let's go Krogering?

Featured Replies

I really don't see the issue with the new name. I get it's different from Commonwealth, but I don't think Kroger Field is all that bad...

I agree.

So Louisville was ahead of the curve when they sold their stadium name (that they paid for independently by the way) to Papa John. As I recall there was some derision on here over that decision, corporate money had no place in college sports etc. Now the inevitable nickname. If PJCS is The Oven what will Kroger Field's be? U Click? The Bag? Express Line?
Has Papa John's stadium always been named Papa John's?

Yes.

No problem with it at all. Nor would I have a problem if they renamed Rupp Arena.

I have some suggestions.

So Papa John's opened in 1998 as Papa John's Stadium. This board started in 2000 I believe. I'm not 100% there was even a colllege sports forum then but even if there was it's safe to assume there wasn't much discussion regarding the stadium name. Now that doesn't mean there hasn't been a poster here and there make comments about it but I'm guessing not much.

It may have been a UofL board and uf that's the case I stand corrected but I do remember some snide comments. And I didn't say it was when the stadium first opened. I didn't start actively engaging in message boards until I started here.

The comments I'm remembering may have also been in the HS board when the state games were moved to PJCS. Wherever I saw them I distinctly remember that at least 1 UK poster took issue with it.

I'm still calling it Commonwealth stadium regardless.

His Momma named him Clay, I'm gonna call him Clay

I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've even said the words "Commonwealth Stadium". It's either "home" or "Lexington".

I don't think Kroger doing this is crazy. And UK should make money anyway they can. The corporate headquarters is 90 miles North so this isn't crazy. Plus for value sponsoring UK is better brand recognition than UC with UK playing in the SEC and playing in bigger games.

I guess it could look similar to this.

I actually like that design a lot. The colors are complimentary. The logo is obvious, but not outrageous. I like the balance with the SEC logo.

And because this makes so much sense, they will obviously NOT choose this design.

They won't put Kroger on the field.
