I think so as well. IF there are no big games on TV I think more people would come to the Sweet 16 games.

Just looking at one team their district and region as an example.

 

4 days off before first district game

2 days off between district 1st round and 2nd round (District Tourney took 4 days)

 

6 days off between district finals and region 1st round

 

3 days off between region round 1 and region round 2

0 days off between region semis and finals (Region Tourney took 7 days)

 

7 days off between region finals and 1st round of the Sweet 16

 

This team had 22 days off from the end of the season and the start of the Sweet 16 with 5 days mixed in with games. There is definitely room to squeeze a week out of the post season.

 

But cutting just one week out puts the Sweet 16 in direct competition with the SEC tourney...not sure if that is better or worse compared to the first weekend of the NCAAs.

Though I thoroughly enjoy the experience of attending the Sweet 16, and did so for a 10 year run between 1999-2009, in 2009 they began video broadcasting in real time for free, and after a few years it became something like a 12 hour delay (I do recall however watching CovCath in 2014 win the tourney in real time with no delay or fee, so I'm a bit foggy about when they stopped the delay), and then last year began to charge a reasonable fee to watch the whole tourney in real time.

 

I can't say that I'll never attend again, but I have great memories of being there and relive them in my mind whenever I'm watching on my tablet that I attach to my TV.

 

Personally I'm content with the ease of that while also staying in tune with what's happening in the NCAA tourney.

 

I've no way of knowing how many others are opting for the online approach, but it would seem that this could have some bit of a significant effect on people when trying to decide whether or not to go (and spend some bucks) or just stay home and watch the whole thing for $10.

 

Sure, I'd hate to see that cheap option turn into a more expensive one, but It wouldn't surprise me if it did, and I'd have to believe that this is having some significant effect on the over all attendance numbers with folks having this alternative option.

 

If the option wasn't available, being the Sweet 16 fanatic that I am, I'm sure that I'd be considering attending. I have to believe there are others in the same boat.

Sorry to hear that. Like I said earlier, this was my first trip to the sweet 16 and thought it was ran great. No one ever asked to see tickets, the only time an usher asked us anything was yesterday when one asked if we needed help finding our seats, the rest of the days they simply said hi as we walked by into what ever section we were entering.

End the season one week sooner, reschedule 2 games to earlier in the season. Then cut 7 days out of the 22 off days during the playoffs. Then you are playing Sweet 16 a week before the SEC.

UK almost always plays Tuesday and Saturday of the final week, typically rotating home/away annually. A Tuesday game wouldn't cause much trouble but they would have to work around a Saturday UK game. But it would only be every other year so I'd guess they could find a way to make it work.

The SEC/NCAA tournaments don't mean near as much to attendance as the teams playing. While you may see a slight bump if it's moved, I don't think we are going to see drastically different numbers. It's all about the teams that are playing.

I think it is a combination of both. BG and Fern Creek did not have a big fan base. If someone else advances it drives up attendance. But if you move away from other tournaments it would bring some more in wanting to watch some good basketballs. I heard too many times this week from Thursday on that some would rather watch 3-4 NCAA games going on than the sweet 16 games.
