Very rarely do movie adaptations of books do the book justice. Give me the book every time.

Movies always condense the book into their 2 hour final product thereby cutting a lot of important things out. I hate that.

I'm fine with both, but I always read the book first. When I see a movie that looks good, and is adapted from a book, I read the book right away before seeing the movie.

This. My wife makes fun of me, but I always read novels as if it is a movie playing in my head.

I enjoy watching the movie and then going back and reading the books. Helps me enjoy the book a lot better and my imagination sucks, so I like having the characters image in my head already before I start the book.

I'm going to take the book first in almost all cases.

 

One example of the opposite is the upcoming Dark Tower movie. I highly doubt I'll devote the energy to reading that series before the movie comes out -- although it's been on my radar for quite some -- but if I enjoy the movie I'll go back and dive into the series.

However, I recently read "Inferno" by Dan Brown with the intention of seeing the movie afterwards. The book was intriguing for about two-thirds of it but then Brown got too caught up in his own plot twists and came up with several goofy ideas to make them work. By the time I completed the last chapter I was disappointed. Wasted time reading that book and definitely didn't want to go see the movie. I'll probably catch it on Netflix in the future but not going to a theater.

 

On the other hand I read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy when I was in college in the '70's and was pleased with the movies. I thought Peter Jackson did a great job putting that complex story to film.
