Corbin Football

Featured Replies

Bottom line is if you even try to compare programs such as Lynn Camp, Knox Central or Williamsburg with a program like Corbin your having major delusions. And its not a knock to their programs either.....

For tradition you cannot compare those schools to Corbin, but right in the present, it is a very fair comparision. Yet another illustration of just how far Corbin has fallen.

I would like to comment on this subject: Yes I know a little about the tradition at Corbin. I played on the 76 state champion team and the 77 runner-up team. I really believe that we fell into a pass happy offense several years ago, we lost one of the best high school coaching staff in the state in Cotton Adams,Coach Burchette and Coach Fualkner and several others and never have recovered from it. Back in the day as everyone is saying, we were hard nose and lined up and hit you in the face for 4 quarters, on offense and defense and many of you will say that it can't be done this day and time. WRONG, I watched Bell Co. and the old time coach(Helton) line up and played the old corbin style and beat us for the past three years. Everyone talks about how tuff our schedule is, you want to talk about tuff, look at the 1976, 1977 schedule and the 1980, and 82 schedule and tell me who played the tuffest schedule. Mayfield,Danville,Madison Central, Bryan Station,MIddlesboro and Somerset just to name a few. SOmeone stated that if the kid from Bell would have stayed the out-come may have been different Friday night. We have had several over the past years and still haven't won a state championship. Play with want we have and line up and bust people in the face like the old days.

Football is still a very physical game, and we are not physical. Many think that it is a numbers game, we had more on the sideline than Bell or Oldham Co. If we don't have the athletes like the teams we play then my solution is to keep the ball from them. I believe our coaching style needs to change.

WOW, you can't put it any clearer than that.......

where did you get the information about corbin losing in the preseason to lynn camp and knox central.....they didnt play either teams.....how can you even compare corbin to teams such as williamsburg, lynn camp, or knox central....yea you are right they do have better records but the teams they play against are teams such as...jellico,pineville,onieda, and many more. Im not saying they have bad teams but, they also play much inferior teams corbin plays teams like BELL CO., ROCKCASTLE CO, SOUTH LAUREL, M'BORO, and records show that its not how you play in the regular season its how you do it in the post season and history shows that corbin does it.

If im not mistaken i believe Lc plays teams Just as tough as corbin an they are a class A team M'boro that will probly be on the magic carpet....some people cant give another team any credit when they do better than corbin too much pride i guess too realize that corbin aint always better than the local teams i dont believe in the last 3 years they have even beat a local team that they have played......

For those worried about Corbin football, they will be fine if they are as young as what I hear. They played Bell tough Friday night.

But dropping Bell from the schedule makes no sense. How many other games is Corbin's visiting bleachers full? Its a good fun rivalry and not one that should end. This is a very dissapointing turn of events!

According to Massey, so far this season Corbin's schedule is rated #46 in the state (#2 in 2A), Lynn Camp #129 (#18 in 1A). So let's not go as far as to say that LC plays just as tough a schedule as Corbin. I normally stick up for you guys, but come on....

Not trying to prove anything here, but just for fun I went to the Calpreps site and did the matchups with LC playing Corbin's schedule and further down Corbin playing LC's schedule. Calpreps is usually pretty good at picking a winner. Again, just for fun not trying to start anything.

LC 17 Rock 46

LC 26 Oldham 38

LC 26 South 40

LC 17 Lex Christain 38

LC 10 Bell 41

Then ran Corbin through Cal preps, actual scores to the right:

Corbin 20 Rock 34 actual Rock 2-0

Corbin 24 Oldham 26 actual Oldham 34-20

Corbin 21 South 26 actual South 21-20

Corbin 14 LCA 20 actual Corbin 20-6

Corbin 6 Bell 21 actual Bell 17-14

Corbin 17 Leslie 8

Corbin 20 Middlesboro 27

Corbin 28 PCC 7

Corbin 26 Whitley 21

Corbin 35 Pineville 3

LC 19 Leslie 28 actual Leslie 27 - 20

LC 21 Middlesboro 42 actual Middlesboro 48-14

LC 34 PCC 24 actual LC 42-27

LC 26 Whitley 38 actual Whitley 49-20

LC 42 Pineville 21 actual LC 52-14

Calpreps also had Corbin undefeated playing teams in LC's district. LC going 1-3 against Corbin's district.

To those who think the ship has sunk, we all could see this coming a few years back - not many kids in last year or this years senior classes came out for football even before middle school.

Steve jewell has a 69 - 29 record since taking over at Corbin, take out this season and last he is 62 - 19. Just hasn't had the talent the last couple of years to win with the schedule that we are playing. I haven't heard anyone get on the coaching staff on here, and I hope they don't, I believe the staff is getting the most that they can from the talent they have right now.

Not sure about last year, but any other year Corbin would win the class A dist. 7 including this year. OK, we're 1-4 this year but these are much different losses than last year when we didn't have much of a chance in any of the 5 regular season losses. I believe we should win the next 5 games and first 2 playoff games, unless there is a surprise in the district that I don't know about.

What would his record be outside of district and playoffs..playoff record should be good with getting to play a 4seed every year and 1st 2 at home......

You are entitled to your opinion and me mine, the coaching style doesn't need to change. The attitudes on the field need to change.

True, don't mean to seem like we're butting heads alot but haven't you ever heard the old addage "attitude reflects leadership?" I am not aware of an on field attitude problem. But if there is, its the Coaches job to do something about it.

I don't put any importance at all on pre-season games nor do I want to join the which local team is better debate, but just to set the record straight KC/Corbin did play in the '05 grid-o-rama at Corbin. As for your scheduling comments, Corbin does play a tough pre-district schedule but Knox Central plays in a seven team district against the likes of Bell, Rockcastle, Clay, Madison Southern, Letcher and Perry Central. Again, not trying to make any point, just setting the facts straight.

I thought that you played for Bell Co.

Let me rephrase effort needed to change, and it did. Not saying at all that all those kids weren't playing there heart out at times. I honestly think that has been remedied. The Bell Co. game showed alot of improvement. The Coaches can't strap the pads on and do it for them the KHSAA won't allow that. They had to find what they needed on their own and they did.

Very good post. Pretty much sums it up. :thumb:

Read Coach T's post and I don't think anything more needs to be said about the state of Corbin football. Those '76 and '77 Hounds teams were the toughest I've ever seen. They would flat bust you in the mouth and feel mighty good about doing it. I don't want Sunday School boys on my football team. Football is a tough sport and I want TOUGH guys on my team. This Corbin team is on the "soft serve" side and the program is not what it once was. I have fond memories of those '76 and '77 teams(still bothered by that 14-13 loss to Mayfield).

Corbin does not get many(if any)tough guy types to play these days. The requirement of Sunday morning church service followed by film study in the afternoon has weeded them out;) or maybe it's just the demographics have changed.

Corbin has lost to both Lynn Camp and Knox Central in Grid-a Rama games in recent years.

The LC loss in the grid was during the Mike Whitaker era if I'm not mistaken, I don't think that would be considered recent. I believe it was 1997. Corbin played Lynn Camp in 1998 in the Pigskin and beat them 60-20 with JV playing a lot in the 2nd half. '98 was supposed to be one of the best Lynn Camp teams in years, at that time. That was Quinton Henson's Jr year (6th leading rusher in state history)

And a grid game is only a scrimmage, nothing more....
