you are correct, but which area team goes the furthest in the playoffs almost every year? When is the last time any of those teams went to a state championship game or a semi-state game? That is when winning really counts.

Correct, post season wins mean the most and usually we do well in November. That wasn't my point. The point I wanted to make is that realistically, we are not steps above of everyone else in this area as True Redhound may think. Its not being fairweather, just realistic.

If name-calling is your best response, then my point is well made. I do want to expand on the comments you have made, True Redhound.

What ever happened to earning the right to be the top team in the area? Years ago, I watched Corbin teams beat some of Kentucky's best teams; like Middlesboro when they were ranked #1 or #2, or Mayfield when they were near the top of the National Super 25. Back then, your comments would be right on target, Corbin was top dog, and was at least a few notches above anyone in the area except Middlesboro.

However, in the last few seasons the Redhounds haven't earned the right to be called top dog in the area. Here is why:

Since the 2002 season: 1 win and 5 loss record against Bell; Rock we split (1 win, 1 loss) and against South we also have a 1 win 5 loss record. Over this period, against these three teams we have a total record of 3 wins vs. 11 losses since 2002. Throw in a loss to another area team (Williamsburg) and the collective record is 3 wins vs. 12 losses. A 3 WIN 12 LOSS RECORD IS NOT REFLECTIVE OF A TEAM THAT IS ABOVE/BETTER/NOT COMPARABLE TO ANYONE!!!!

You can call me a fairweather fan, or whatever else you'd prefer. But what you can't do is deny these facts. You make it sound like area teams like K.C., Wburg, and Lynn Camp are not capable of beating us. I have news for you: One, I'm not a fairweather fan (just a smart one that can see past a line of garbage). Two, any team in the area is VERY capable of beating us (Note I ever said Wburg is overly superior to us as you claim I did). Three (and most important: THE RIGHT TO BE CALLED THE BEST IS PROVEN BY PERFORMANCE ON THE FIELD, AND 3 AND 12 IS NOT OVER SUPERIOR!!!

Thank You for your time.

I was referring to willamsburg program being better. That was the way i took your original post. If that wasn't the case sorry for the mis-understanding. If it is there is no way any team around here has the program that Corbin has. Cut and dry that is the bottom line.

... Actually the Somerset game was by far the best Wburg played that year,Cumberland and Hazard games were pretty good also......Wburg played average at best the Corbin game.................Corbin has an excellent football program, tradition and fans. Truth of the matter is at least the last 3 years Corbin could not have won Class A district 7 or 8 and Wburg, Somerset, LC or Pikeville have been better than any other team in Corbins district. I dont think Corbin football has dropped off alot over the years but schools around here have picked it up. I also believe soccer has hurt Corbin football by taking some of the faster kids

You are joking I hope about Corbin not winning Class A district 7 or 8 the past three years.

Somerset won district 7 three years ago(2003 season) with an undefeated record. Corbin beat Somerset 54-22 in a game that was not even that close and also beat Williamsburg 55-14. Surely Corbin could have eeked out a district title that year.

Williamsburg had an excellent team in 2004(undefeated until the regional final) and they beat Corbin that year, but I would take Corbin 8 out of 10 times in that match-up and feel pretty secure in that. I honestly think that Corbin would have swept that district in 2004 if they had been in it.

Now in 2005 I would agree that Corbin would have finished third in that district behind Somerset and Lynn Camp.

As far as soccer goes, there are a couple of kids most years who would help the football team out, but that should not make or break anyone.

Corbin Football was built by CSX and Pepsi, when you have those two organizations putting people to work, you can get whoever you want to play football.

But what do I know

T.R.

No, I am in no way inferring Williamsburg to have a better program than we do. There is alot more parity in area football now than before, and not a dominating team in the area right now. That may change in a year or so.

I do admire and share your love of the Redhounds though. I wish we were notches ahead of everyone, too.

I do stand corrected by 4CHS, Omitted from the stat was a 55-14 win against Wburg, so recently we have split that series as well.

So he was off by a year ... the point still has some validity.

Bottom line ... Corbin didn't beat Williamsburg, so they wouldn't have won that district. Maybe the Redhounds would have beaten Pikeville, but there are no guarantees there. And since Pikeville ripped Corbin last year, there seems to be little doubt about that.

Not to make excuses, but if the W'burg game would have been a district game in 2004, a couple of key players who sat out may not have been out, plus Corbin did some experimenting with personnel that game playing some DB's the entire game that basically only played in that game. But you have to give W'burg their due, they were real fired-up that night(caused 8 Corbin turnovers) and seemed to want it more than the Hounds in addition to the fact they were a very good team that year, though not quite in the same class as E-town or O-Catholic. Maybe the outcome would have remained the same if it were a district game, but I doubt it myself.

Corbin was not very good, expecially early in 2005, but they were probably one bad break away from likely playing in the state semifinal game.

To those who think the ship has sunk, we all could see this coming a few years back - not many kids in last year or this years senior classes came out for football even before middle school.

Steve jewell has a 69 - 29 record since taking over at Corbin, take out this season and last he is 62 - 19. Just hasn't had the talent the last couple of years to win with the schedule that we are playing. I haven't heard anyone get on the coaching staff on here, and I hope they don't, I believe the staff is getting the most that they can from the talent they have right now.

Not sure about last year, but any other year Corbin would win the class A dist. 7 including this year. OK, we're 1-4 this year but these are much different losses than last year when we didn't have much of a chance in any of the 5 regular season losses. I believe we should win the next 5 games and first 2 playoff games, unless there is a surprise in the district that I don't know about.

If one takes off their red-tinted glasses, they would have to agree that you make some very valid points. If I was rating the teams say from the following counties(Bell, Laurel, Whitley, Knox, Clay)for 2004-2006, it would look something like this.

2006

1. Bell

2. Middlesboro

3. North Laurel

4. Corbin

5. South Laurel

6. Whitley

7. Clay

8. Lynn Camp

9. Knox Co

10.Williamsburg

2005

1. Bell

2. Lynn Camp

3. South Laurel

4. Whitley

5. Corbin

6. North Laurel

7. Middlesboro

8. Clay Co.

9. Knox Central

10. Williamsburg

2004

1. Bell Co.

2. Corbin

3. South Laurel

4. North Laurel

5. Williamsburg

6. Whitley

7. Clay Co.

8. Middlesboro

9. Lynn Camp

10.Knox Central

The youth program was revised (starting with this year's junior class)because there were not enough kids participating in grades 3-6 due to only having one team per grade. The number of kids now participating and going on to play middle school and high school football increased partly due to this change. The current senior class was not very competitive in middle school football mainly due to a lack of numbers, then combine that with last year's class that had so many transfer out resulted in the 2005 and 2006 teams being very young and inexperienced.

Your exactly right, the coaching staff cannot coach players that are not there to coach. Maybe they could keep a few other kids interested and playing by making sure that more players see more playing time from the 7th grade through JV play, but its a fine line to walk trying to stay competitive at those levels and balancing out playing time.

Bottom line is if you even try to compare programs such as Lynn Camp, Knox Central or Williamsburg with a program like Corbin your having major delusions. And its not a knock to their programs either.....

I should hope Corbin would beat them 8 of 10 times. Corbin is a 2A school (a pretty godo sized one at that) and Williamsburg is a pretty small 1A school. Now, how good would the Burg program be if they had the numbers that Corbin did? Honestly you're comparing 2 unequal schools here and the same should go for when Corbin has to play those Big 4A schools. Honestly Corbin has played some tough teams this year from Big Schools and may have lost but have done pretty well against them. However you must admit that Corbins district is pretty weak though, not near as tough as the 1A district Somerset, Lynn Camp, Wburg, Harlan. Not saying those teams are better than Corbin just comparing Districts at that level.

I would like to comment on this subject: Yes I know a little about the tradition at Corbin. I played on the 76 state champion team and the 77 runner-up team. I really believe that we fell into a pass happy offense several years ago, we lost one of the best high school coaching staff in the state in Cotton Adams,Coach Burchette and Coach Fualkner and several others and never have recovered from it. Back in the day as everyone is saying, we were hard nose and lined up and hit you in the face for 4 quarters, on offense and defense and many of you will say that it can't be done this day and time. WRONG, I watched Bell Co. and the old time coach(Helton) line up and played the old corbin style and beat us for the past three years. Everyone talks about how tuff our schedule is, you want to talk about tuff, look at the 1976, 1977 schedule and the 1980, and 82 schedule and tell me who played the tuffest schedule. Mayfield,Danville,Madison Central, Bryan Station,MIddlesboro and Somerset just to name a few. SOmeone stated that if the kid from Bell would have stayed the out-come may have been different Friday night. We have had several over the past years and still haven't won a state championship. Play with want we have and line up and bust people in the face like the old days.

Football is still a very physical game, and we are not physical. Many think that it is a numbers game, we had more on the sideline than Bell or Oldham Co. If we don't have the athletes like the teams we play then my solution is to keep the ball from them. I believe our coaching style needs to change.

You are entitled to your opinion and me mine, the coaching style doesn't need to change. The attitudes on the field need to change.
