Corbin Football

Back to Corbin football, not sure if it's just me but it seems as though every team we have played this season and the last few seasons have been stronger, as in weight room stronger. Most other teams have visibly more muscle and honestly seem to knock us around a little. This is where we had our advantage in the 70's and most of the 80's with Coach Burchette. If we had players with the strength of the Francioni brothers, Taylor brothers, Coach Jewell and many others would there even be a need for this thread?

GO down and look at the board we still have some of the strongest kids around.

Danville in Pigskin and Belfry in Pike Co Bowl is what I'm told.

That is two tough games to start off with and a nice scheduling move for the Redhounds.

Of course, as a Belfry fan, this makes me look forward to next year already. Corbin is a great program and a perfect fit for the PCB, IMO. :thumb:

All teams hit the weight room hard now. Corbin many years ago had the adantage in strength but not anymore. To have an advantage these days its speed and numbers.

This is very true. Back in the "glory days" so to speak, Corbin was ahead of the times. As things became more modernized, programs did too. It is now time for Corbin to find a way to get ahead of the times to gain that upper hand on competition as they did back in the day. Keep one step ahead of your opponent as they say.

I understand Corbin will travel to Knott County Central next year on week 9 in the new district. along, but, not bad trip. KCC knows they have to really step it up and will do the work necessary to compete in this very tough 2A district. Corbin is well respected as a top notch football program by the KCC Football Family and we are looking forward to playing the Redhounds!:ylsuper:

I've got to agree with Jim Schue and 4chs. For a solid program such as Corbin, sometimes the difference between being a very good team and an outstanding team is only two or three players. With Corbin's geographic location (parts of the city are in Whitley, Knox, and Laurel Counties) and tradition they were a convenient alternative for kids looking to move to a more competitive program. With the KHSAA moving to a six class system next season the current 4A programs (South Laurel, North Laurel, and Whitley) are going to find themselves much more competitive in their new districts. If those three take advantage of the opportunity I would think it would be very difficult for Corbin to maintain their program at the level they are accustomed to. Time will tell.

So basically the Pigskin is set from what I was just told.

Year 1

Corbin vs. Danville

Middlesboro vs. Knox Central

Year 2

Corbin vs. Knox Central

Middlesboro vs. Danville

Is this set in stone?

Corbin, along with schools such as Somerset and Middlesboro benefited from either being the only schools that played football or that played it well in their immediate area. Corbin probably loses more athletes(for various reasons) to other schools than they gain at this time, which did not use to be the case. But like I stated in an earlier post, the number of kids in the Corbin School System are at record levels, the number of kids out for all sports offered at Corbin are really high now also, so I don't forsee any problems in maintaining the athletic programs at least at the level they have been at for the last several years.

Corbin is growing at a very fast pace, there are 500 plus kids in Pre-Kid. At this rate it will not be long before they are AAA...4chs hit the nail on the head, back in the day Corbin got a few kids form Knox, Laurel, and Whitley, that does not seem to happen as much now...If the Christopher from Bell was there this thread may not even exist..One or two kids coming in every other year can really turn things around, it just does not happen often enough now...

Froom the other Thread:

The letter to the editor has nothing to do with the the hounds so called falling. It came from a man who was a little mixed up and not from around here to know what Corbin football is. And obviously knows nothing about the game at all. 8 plays????? this isn't pee-wee.

Thats what i am saying, the people doing it haven't a clue of what it means to be a redhound and how passionate the better part of the community is about it. Its more than a thing to do on friday night, more than somthing to talk about on here, and more than to let some idiot parents thoughts of frustration change any opinions. It is a way of life for most people here. Its not that the program is falling it is that the people moving in here stick their nose where they have no clue what is going on.:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

And PS unless you are around the program you need not make comments about what being a REDHOUND is or unless you have ever been one. That makes you look as senseless as the man who wrote the article.

Someone may know for sure but I heard Corbins HS 9-12 enrollment was 720 this year.

I know all about Corbin's tradition. I have not seen the Redhounds play in a few years. However, I have been told by some people in the Corbin area that they are losing some kids in the school and on the team to other schools in the area. Lynn Camp, South Laurel and Whitley Co., I was told. This is probably the main reason. It has happened to Somerset also. These were two of the premier programs of 2A for about a 25 year stretch.

I believe that number is real close with over 375 of that total in the freshman and sophomore classes. Two of the three middle school grades enrollment numbers are very high and there is always an influx of approximately 20 kids who start attending the Corbin system in the 7th grade that may make this year's 6th grade class the largest ever at Corbin.

Corbin is well over the cut-off for 3A in the new football alignment already.
