The LC loss in the grid was during the Mike Whitaker era if I'm not mistaken, I don't think that would be considered recent. I believe it was 1997. Corbin played Lynn Camp in 1998 in the Pigskin and beat them 60-20 with JV playing a lot in the 2nd half. '98 was supposed to be one of the best Lynn Camp teams in years, at that time. That was Quinton Henson's Jr year (6th leading rusher in state history)

And a grid game is only a scrimmage, nothing more....

I think it was 52-0 or 52-6 when the starters were pulled early in the third quarter.

Starters were pulled much later then that, with about 4 or 5 minutes to go in the game. It was the sametime I left, and I remember the Whitley radio guys did the game that year, and I listen to them, and they remarked about that. LC did beat them in a scrimmage, but it was more then a scrimmage loss for the Hounds it meant more to them, then the win meant for Lynn Camp. They brought Lynn Camp into the Pigskin the next year, and had shirts printed up with score of the Pigskin game after it. 98, was a good year for us, and it was one of our better teams. But we started the that year in typical Lynn Camp fashion with some early season losses, when the weather cools down we seem to play better. Corbin doesn't mind as much losing to the Danville's Bell's and Rock's. The local teams beating them, stings to no end for Corbin fans. The talent level at the schools has gotten better and has made our area of football much better.

I agree with that statement about the grid. While Grid O Rama's are unimportant and basically just for getting kinks worked out, losing to a local team hurt. That year hurt especially because at the time Lynn Camp wasn't much count as a program like it is today if I am not mistaken. They were beginning to rise up again in the mid nineties but unlike today a loss to LC then was the epitome of embarassment.

I also agree, that Corbin doesn't seem to mind losing to the traditional powers as much anymore but do hate losing to local schools. I don't intend to sound conceited and I acknowledge the success and upswing of local programs but I still think it is absolutely unacceptable to lose to any local school. I don't care if it is A Lynn Camp or Williamsburg or AAAA Laurel's or Whitley. Here in Corbin , you just don't lose to local schools. With that said, I think any loss is unacceptable. Corbin is known for winning, greatness, and tradition and I'll be you know what if I ever view it any other way.

I think it is time that the community as a whole band together and put everything aside. Fans need to quit worrying about what coaches are doing what and coaches need to quit worrying about what is said around town or on the internet. Whining about this play call or that play call isn't going to make a gat dang difference in anything. If Corbin ever gets in bad enough shape where a coaching changed needs to be made, the school board will hand out pink slips. Until then, we all need to band together and stop all of this ignorant you know what and moaning.

The staff and players hate losing just as much as any of us bleacher coach fans hate losing. This Friday, lets get a crowd and go up to Pulaski and show em what Pride and Tradition is all about! Also for the love of God, lets make some noise and turn Campbell Field back into a place where people fear coming. The opposing teams needs to view that Corbin game on their schedule as a trip into a hostile environment instead of a chance to play on one of the nicer natural playing surfaces.

During the mid to late nineties, if memory serves me correctly, Corbin had a tendency to start the season off like state title contenders only to tail off toward the end of the season. The Pigskin game against Lynn Camp is a good example of that. If the two teams had played again late that year, it would have been a good game in my opinion. The team that featured Matt Bargo(maybe '95)would have been another year that Corbin should have done better in the playoffs than they did.

I can't imagine any forced coaching changes will be needed for the next several years. This year's team will be pretty good by season's end and will return about 80% of their starters next year. I would expect some good playoff runs coming over the next few seasons.

I agree, there won't be nor does there need to be anyone calling for jobs unless losing becomes a habit. The future definately looks bright for the Hounds over the next few years. In fact, I'm not so sure that by seasons end there is a team not named Mercer County that I'd take over the Hounds in AA. I hate the losing and think it needs to stop but you can only do so much. The kids and coaches need to get on the same page. The staff knows football as good as any staff inthe state, and the team has as good of talent as there is in AA. Once they start executing, good things will come.

Lynn Camp in 98 was coming off back to back regional runner-up teams, and featured one of the top players in the state, during that time Corbin had not made it past the second round since they lost to Fort Knox in the 1990's state title game, and yes that had a lot to do with the region they were playing in at the time. Losing to LC during those years would have not been an embarassment to anyone.

I believe it was '96, but whenever it was we went into the playoff game against Madison Southern undefeated (I think). we beat them pretty good earlier in the year and had a good lead on them at the half in the playoff game. We had a back (Bargo) averaging 7+ yards a carry and he doesn't touch the ball in the 2nd half? And Whitaker changes his entire game plan for the 2nd half. I still don't understand that game...

:ylsuper: Hey LC99, get yourself over to the Harlan/LCamp thread and endue us with your wisdom. Its just not the same without you.

If I'm not mistaken, Bargo averaged over 11 yards per carry that year(at least according to someone who claims to know)and was a man among boys that season. We did throw it 40+ times that game though. Do you remember the fake punt in that game....................Hal Mumme would not have even attempted that one!

I would like to comment on this subject: Yes I know a little about the tradition at Corbin. I played on the 76 state champion team and the 77 runner-up team. I really believe that we fell into a pass happy offense several years ago, we lost one of the best high school coaching staff in the state in Cotton Adams,Coach Burchette and Coach Fualkner and several others and never have recovered from it. Back in the day as everyone is saying, we were hard nose and lined up and hit you in the face for 4 quarters, on offense and defense and many of you will say that it can't be done this day and time. WRONG, I watched Bell Co. and the old time coach(Helton) line up and played the old corbin style and beat us for the past three years. Everyone talks about how tuff our schedule is, you want to talk about tuff, look at the 1976, 1977 schedule and the 1980, and 82 schedule and tell me who played the tuffest schedule. Mayfield,Danville,Madison Central, Bryan Station,MIddlesboro and Somerset just to name a few. SOmeone stated that if the kid from Bell would have stayed the out-come may have been different Friday night. We have had several over the past years and still haven't won a state championship. Play with want we have and line up and bust people in the face like the old days.

Football is still a very physical game, and we are not physical. Many think that it is a numbers game, we had more on the sideline than Bell or Oldham Co. If we don't have the athletes like the teams we play then my solution is to keep the ball from them. I believe our coaching style needs to change.

If there is one thing that I agreed with regarding the article that was written in the paper not long ago is that coaches must adjust their schemes to their players. If corbin tried to line up and "smash" people in the mouth this year or last im afraid we would not even have won as many games as we have or will this season. And just so everyone knows, I still think the rest of the article in the paper was ignorant and served no purpose except to embarass the son of the man who wrote it.

That 1996 Corbin team was the best team I have ever seen in the past 20 years. Yes I think they would have beaten the Trinity's and males. Yes I think they could have won any class that year. No I am not being a Corbin homer, they were just that good when they played their A game.

The madison southern team was destroyed by Corbin just two week s before hand. I'll say that the playoff game was one of the few bad coached games by Coach Whitaker. He ran a very balanced offense, in fact, the best offense I have seen in a while, however he passed, passed, passed that game. Danny Steely was a great QB but no Tim Couch. I guess even the best offensive minds have a few poorly called games here and there.

I do want to know why people say Coach Whitaker was a passing coach? Coach Whitaker ran the best and most balanace offense that I have seen. Some games he would air it out but it was well balanced like we run now at Corbin. Here is some food for thought. Corbin's best QB since Clint Cashen was in the 1998 season When Floyd Whitaker transferred down for the year. What is the most passing attemptes he had in a single game? 19!! That doesn't say air raid coach to me. People just do not like Coach Whitaker because he was an outsider and stupid rumors had to get started. He was a fine coach and great man. With that said, I am tickled with and think the world of Coach Jewell and the current staff. They understand Corbin football as good as anyone and are truly great men. Corbin has been in good hands always.

Yes Sir!

All of those teams were tougher than boot leather.
