I live in a world where everyone around me believes in God and I do not. I am used to living with vast differences of opinion and beliefs. With that said, my two cents:

 

Politics is not ugly. Politics is what we make of it. We define politics just as we define every other aspect of our lives with the choices we make. Bernie Sanders is a politician and has been one for his entire life. No scandals, no hints of being a dishonest person, no blinding ambition. Just a decent guy his entire life. And couldn't the same sorts of things be said about Kasich?

 

Had we chose Sanders and Kasich as the nominees, politics would not be ugly. They give us what we want, what they think we want. And come election day, we are going to earn the two candidates we have, by voting for them.

 

People say, don't complain about the state of affairs if you don't go vote. Isn't also fair then to say don't complain about the candidates if you hold your nose and vote for one of them. If you hold your nose and vote for Trump or HRC, ...you still just voted for them.

 

The second cent:

 

Sometimes things are unpleasant. I am happy, in a way, for the coming of candidate Trump. We are shining a light now on some dark corners of our nation's basement. Nothing really new is being learned, except for I guess some people are a bit surprised how prevalent some of these hateful ways of thinking are. But we get to expose them, reject them, and move on. Unpleasant...I guess. Ugly, whatever, ...it's a fight worth having. This is a fight for equal rights and equality under the law. A fight worth having and worth a little ugliness along the way.

While I've only met RTS of the ones you mentioned (great guy), I'm absolutely looking forward to the day @mountain ref and I can finally meet. I think he and I will get along very well. I also think @capt278 and I would find we see eye to eye on more things than either of us would realize. Same goes for @Bluegrasscard as well.

 

And even though he has no respect for me, I'd enjoy having a beer with @Jesse James.

I try to be respectful of the community here. And for 8 years I have tried to be respectful of the current holder of the office of POTUS. Trying to call out policy flaws and issues and not direct at the person themselves. For the most part the holder of office of POTUS is a figurehead with dozens or more of handlers, advisers, stakeholders and big money backers. They are not, or not supposed to be, arbitrary pseudo-dictators. Though the wimpy Congress lets them for the most part.

 

This round is uglier - by far - than most in the past. Look at the topics: sex issues, process corruption, buyoffs, big money.

 

Discussion on fixing ACA? No. Discussion on US involvement - open or clandestine - in the middle east? No. Discussion on cost college for our kids or the outrageous interest rate they (we) pay back - to the government!?!? No. The candidates are not discussing policy one iota and neither are we. They are almost exclusively mud-slinging, accusing, baiting, etc. And so are we.

 

'The system' is broken. Jessie V outlined very well how the bribary based, pay4play system overall has corrupted the entire process (that applies to both major parties). Not just 'the politicians', but anyone wanting to engage in influencing public policy. Lobbyists, corporations, etc. All have become numb to the fact that illegal activity is the norm. And they just go with it. And it perpetuates.

 

So I bet if we start with the common ground that the system is very broken and needs to changed 98% of us will have that view in common. Change to broken systems come in two ways - via vision or via crisis. Vision would be good. But if there is going to be a change to this broken system it seems crisis may be the only route. Some of us think the crisis in here in this round or it is time to fully expose the crisis. Some do not and think it can improved in less drastic ways and more over time. THAT probably defines a lot of our discourse here.

No worries on that account. While we usually disagree on things political, I respect the fact that as a rule, you don't simply post a video and demand that we "watch this". At least you put some thought into your posts - much more than me, to be truthful.

There's a difference in wanting and asking someone to watch a video or read a link, and asking for discussion, and posting and demanding people watch/read, and stating that of they don't have the same conclusion as yourself, they are wrong.

And besides, some of us just prefer to read about it. I don't like to watch internet video clips, for the most part. I just skip over those threads.
