Is There a Song From Yesteryear That Really Speaks To You Now ???

Featured Replies

I can't believe thirty years has passed since 1986. I can't believe I started high school forty years ago. Forty-five years since I attended my first Reds' game. Christmas mornings at my grandparents......

I wanna go back !!! I'd even go to prom if I could go back. Maybe even go disco dancin'.

But I can't go back....

I was listening to the radio

I heard a song reminded me of long ago

Back then I thought that things were never gonna change

It used to be that I never had to feel the pain

I know that things will never be the same now

I want to go back

And do it all over again

But I can't go back I know

I want to go back

Cause I'm feeling so much older

But I can't go back I know

I recall hanging out on Friday night

The first slow dance

Hoping that I'll get it right

Back then I thought I'd never ever stand alone

It used to be that a lonely heart was never shown

I know that things will never be the same

I want to go back

And do it all over again

But I can't go back I know

I want to go back

Cause I'm feeling so much older

But I can't go back I know

From Dead Presidents II- 22Twos on Reasonable Doubt is an exercise in flexing God-given ability, and is probably the best 20 consecutive minutes of an album in rap history, but Feelin' It by Jay-Z is the song that answers the question.

This will always be the first one that comes to mind.

True then, and true now.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again

The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older

Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way

The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again

I like to be here when I can

When I come home cold and tired

It's good to warm my bones beside the fire

Far away, across the field

The tolling of the iron bell

Calls the faithful to their knees

To hear the softly spoken magic spell

I think of this song often. It was released in 1970 the same year my father was seriously injured at his gas station. My father only had a 3rd grade education but worked hard and made himself a successful business man. On his dying bed he told me he was proud of me and to take care of the family. He died shortly after.

It's a simple song that brings back a TON of memories and to this day whenever I hear it I stop what I'm doing to reminisce.

I can completely relate. This tune felt prophetic when I was listening to it at the age of 10 and ever more so now that I am older. They poetically nailed a true vibe of the human experience, and they weren't even 30 yet in doing so. Pretty keen understanding for dudes in their 20's.

Have always loved this song. My oldest sister had it as her wedding song in the early 70's. Timeless tune.

Boy, that old Chicago stuff was pure gold, and still is !!!

This one reminds me of my dad. I still have the album. We nearly wore it out

The temptations Ball of confusion. Some things never change.

Just saw this pic, made me think of this thread and our two posts.

Wow... that's all too real isn't it?

Life is so much more of a faster trip than a small child can realize, and the older we get it just seems to speed up.

I recall listening and reading the lyrics to Time very intently at 10 (and that doesn't even feel that long ago) and feeling the melancholy of its mood and message, and it's probably one of the most influential songs to have shaped my life.

Probably too heavy for me to be pondering at that age, but nonetheless I did, and no doubt I can point to it as setting me on a course of being analytical, and even all too often a moody isolationist.

Every minute counts, and I struggle with how many of those minutes I have wasted. Wasted or not, they go by and I can only hope that when I'm seeing my last one that I can appreciate the life I've had and feel contented.

Knowing that you are a long time listener of the Floyd, I can only imagine that you too recognize the effect they've had on your thinking and your moods. I don't regret it, but at times I envy those who can live blissfully without pondering too deeply. Thinking can sometimes have its drawbacks, but once you're a thinker, there's no reversing it.

If life were fair, cool hippie dudes like David Gilmore would stay young forever. If that picture is freaky to us, just imagine what he might think of it. Just the other night a buddy of mine pulled out a photo of me that he had taken nearly 30 years ago. Blew my mind.
