Mark Stoops bans all Kentucky players from owning a handgun

Featured Replies

Stoops told reporters he not only prohibits handguns on campus, he doesn’t allow his players to own them, even with a legal permit.

“Yeah, we do not allow any handguns. I’ve made it very clear to them that I do not want them owning a handgun, even if they have a legal permit for it. They obviously can never have a handgun on campus, but I make it my policy to tell them no guns and come explain to me why they may need a gun because we definitely should not need a gun living in Lexington, Kentucky. So, that’s my policy.”

Oh brother.... you kinda have a big football game coming up!

I'm a new fan of Stoops. College kids make bad decisions. If you want to shoot something, drop football and play with guns. Until then, block and tackle.

So the football coach bans a legal right of his players. Interesting. You would think he would be more worried about the play of this team on the field.

He's saying own them in general, not about bringing them on campus. That's already forbidden.

How many are over 21 and old enough to buy a hand gun?

I think this more about teaching them to make smart choices right now in life than restrictions their rights.

I kind of look at it in a similar way. He's sort of looking out for his kids and also making sure the team doesn't have a tragedy to deal with. However, we don't know how well the guys will listen.

I don't have an issue with it. Probably a good idea, tbh.

I guess taking your coach to court would be in bad form so doubt this goes to court. But this is over-step of a major degree.

It's an interesting hot take. A lot of boys in the south like to hunt. Heck even boys in Ohio like too.

How many of them hunt with handguns? I didn't read anything about banning rifles, shotguns or bows.

Agreed

Most that hunt carry a handgun. Also, there are plenty of pistols that can take out small and medium game.

No, that's not what he said, this is part of his quote: " I’ve made it very clear to them that I do not want them owning a handgun"
