For those that push mow...mulch, bag or side discharge?

Featured Replies

So as some know I got me a nice self propelled push mower earlier this spring. It has of course side discharge, but also has the mulch option and bag option as well. I used the bag option for the first time this weekend and it was crazy the amount of clippings I had before I even finished the front yard, but I did like the way it left the front yard looking. I would have had to empty the bag 5-6 times if I have mowed my whole yard with the bag option though. I have been mulching every mow up until trying the bag, but the mower really bogs down and even chokes out some, especially when doing my back yard, and there is an extreme amount of clippings that build up under the deck that causes this. Perhaps mulching is not the best option for thick grass, especially if you have gone a few days since mowing as it was really a problem Friday evening. Or is the mulching function on my mower maybe not operating properly?:idunno: Not having a mower before that would mulch, I don't know, maybe they only function properly with lighter grass loads. I have yet to use the side discharge as I have to change out the side guard, but looks like I may go to that. I like the looks better when clippings are bagged or mulched, though.

So, when you mow, do you bag, mulch or side discharge?

Bag. Every time. Can't stand all those clippings piled up.

We usually mulch ours. However, there have been times where it's gotten a little too thick for that. Then we usually bag. Yes, they can fill up quite quickly, but we usually dump the clippings into a wheel barrow so that we don't have to make multiple trips to empty. Normally we go ahead and dump it into our compost pile, but you can overload it with too much "green" at this time of the year, so we have an alternative pile that we dump it on, so that it can dry out some. When it's more "brown", then we move it back to the compost pile.

Mulch, but I also don't care about how it looks when it is done as long as it is done. I have better things to do than go outside and groom my yard.

I just blow mine out the side onto the lawn. But then again, I really don't care what my yard looks like and I care even less what people in the neighborhood think of it.

I guess technically I mulch. I don't have the mulching plate (old hand me down mower) so I just keep the back bag cover closed. If I bagged my yard, I'd probably have to empty 15-20 times.

I never use the side discharge. Mulch 95% of the time, unless the grass is really wet or has gotten really tall, in which case I'll bag. I usually bag at least a couple times a year to get some clippings for the compost pile which gets added to the raised beds that I have.

Mulch when I push.

discharge when I ride.

and typically discharge later in the evening. :sssh:

My man!

Used to bag. Now I mulch. Mulching is MUCH better.

:idunno: I have a lawn fairy that takes care of these things.

Side discharge (Riding mower), I've always heard it's better for the yard to leave it. :idunno: I also don't care enough to bag it and get rid of it each time. It looks just fine without doing that.

Always mulch. No need to bag, no need to rake.

Always mulch. No need to rake or bag.

And I just realized I parroted papa...but brilliant lazy minds...

Perhaps I was incorrect about mulching.
