USA Basketball passes up athletes village, staying on luxury cruise ship for Olympics

The U.S. men’s and women’s Olympic basketball teams are experiencing Rio a little differently than the other top athletes there for the Games.

The basketball players are not living among the other athletes at the Olympics athletes' village but have rather taken over a luxury cruise ship docked on the city’s eastern waterfront.

The Silver Cloud yacht can accommodate as many as 400 people in its 196 cabins.

It is not unusual for USA Basketball to opt for a location separate from other Olympic athletes. Since 1992 the organization that oversees the national men’s and women’s teams has put up its athletes outside Olympics athlete villages.

For the 2004 Games in Athens, the basketball team also stayed on a cruise liner. They were housed in hotels in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

One concerns is the high profile nature of the basketball players and whether they will be able to focus without too many distractions from fans if they're housed in a more communal setting.

USA Basketball says given that its players are probably the most recognizable athletes in the world, security needs to be a top priority.

Security measures around the teams digs include a fence made of bulletproof material.

The US athletes are also being guarded by some 250 Federal Police officers, according to Fox Sports.

Some critics question what they call the somewhat elitist accommodations for the US basketball players, noting that other world renowned athletes are being housed in the village.

They include Usain Bolt, known as the worlds fastest man and recently traded Golden State Warrior, now Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut, who is suiting up with Team Australia for the Games.

I don't see why not. She is looking for legal supplements to take to give her an edge. Tons and tons of athletes do that. I think it's well documented that the Russian federation didn't give their athletes much guidance at all. Young girl in a foreign country assumes a reputable nutrition franchise sells supplements that are legal. She didn't contest it and didn't hide from what she did.

Then, she takes a perfectly legal, at the time substance, and stops when it becomes illegal. The substance stays in her body for two months.

If other swimmers, Russian federation, etc. are saying "you can take this because it's legal" and it's been checked out to be legal I'm not seeing the issue.

So one of the best in the world comes to America and has no coaching/guidance on what to put in her body? You make it sound like she was a struggling athlete just trying to make it on her own. If that's the case then fine but I have a hard time believing she didn't have coaches/handlers here helping her. Also no way do I believe someone in her position just walked in GNC and thought this stuff must all be ok. It's not like she came from some 3rd world country where she grew up in the jungle.

What I have read, part of the fun for the Olympians is actually staying in the Village. They get the real "team" aspect from other athletes in different sports.

If their countries want to pony up, they can have a yacht too. I don't blame the Basketball teams for this one bit.

Exactly. Usain Bolt is from Jamaica. He is used to the insanity that is Rio right now. I'd be surprised if many Brazilian criminals even know who Andrew Bogut is. I bet they all know the whole US Olympic team. Except for Harrison Barnes. He's probably safe from recognition.
