Mercer County Titans Tailback ran a 4.6 laser timed 40 today at UK

Celebrating every kid in Ky that could run a 4.6 would probably clog the first page and bump this thread down, there would be 5 players from Male alone.

We WANT the first page clogged with stuff like that. Why wouldn't we want that?

A coach and his staff saying they are "pleased" is a polite way of saying "Thanks for coming, we appreciate your donation to the program." If anyone interprets that to mean you're on our recruiting board or we'll be in touch then I've got some oceanfront property in Arizona I can sell you.

I'm all for building people up. Say he had a nice camp. Just don't base it on a 40 time that isn't fast and then get upset when someone states the obvious.

I spoke to Coach Schlarman. Their staff spoke to ours they were impressed with the 40 time. I believe they were genuine and sincere in saying so. I've known John since watching him practice at Highlands for Coach Duffy in 92 at Highlands. He has never mislead me or lied/exaggerated. Never. Did they offer D? No. Were they impressed and will they be watching him? They say so and I believe them...to the point that in their minds he has satisfied the question "are you fast?" .....in that they did not/do not think it is necessary to see him run another 40.

Very early in my head coaching career, an NFL player told me that his HS coach told him he wasn't good enough to play college football. And, this was a GREAT coach with multiple state titles. That got my attention. I will not be the guy that sells his kids short. Especially a guy with intangibles through the roof like D. Smith.

Never-mind...I'm withdrawing from this insanity.

Never once have I hated on him or his skill, said he was a good high school player. I'm hating on the 4.6 being considered good, when its mediocre for a kid his size.

But...it's not. He sounds like a scat back. I am more interested in his cone drills, shuttle, and 20 than I am his 40. Guys that "slow" at what will eventually be his size have very good college careers being quick in space.

I think the thread should be closed.

We should argue it in another thread titled 40 yard dash times and quit hammering about a high school kid.

Good idea. I agree.

Didn't really want to get involved in this discussion but I thought I would throw this out. In speaking with a college coach at the UK camp the fastest forty time ran was 4.61. That was straight off the spread sheet of all the participants, now this was a quick glance and we could have overlooked one but he said 4.61 was the fastest he saw listed.

D Smith is tough as nails. That kid has a huge heart and brings it every play. Whoever gets this kid is getting a well rounded football player.

I think that what's being missed in this whole fiasco of a discussion is that the kid while fast is still only 5'6' and 160 lbs. If someone is saying he is a legitimate FBS recruit they better guess again!

So you are saying that because he is 5'6" and weights 160 he is not FBS material. So that means that Darren Sproles, that plays for the Eagles, was not FBS material even though he is 5'6' and weights 190 and is a good Pro player. He might not grow anymore and then again he might. But you can bet that a College will put more muscle on him.

I've seen roughly 2,000 kids run the 40 in the past 2 weeks. I can count the ones that ran faster than 4.6 on two hands. And all of those that did already hold multiple BCS offers...

Darren Sproles also ran for 5,230 yards and 79 touchdowns in High School and was barely recruited.
