What Is Going On in the UK Hoops Program?

As bad as things are, if indeed it is a staff member going to NKU, this really is a non-event.

it's an event because it is now the 15th departure in a calendar year. As a single thing, you're right...not a big deal. When it's 15 things in one year, it's a big deal.

I would think 15 people up and leaving a team of what, 25 players and coaches combined is a problem.

It's a problem. I don't care what the reasoning is, it's a problem.

This one is very different. The media will hop on this and link it, but it really isn't connected to the others. A graduate student asst. getting a promotion to an asst. job is really a non-event.

It doesn't matter. That's the exact problem...the media will hop all over it and it becomes another negative.

I've already addressed this once in this thread, so I wont go into detail again...but there is not a "smoking gun." What has been reported is accurate. At this point it's all just become a domino effect...for the current group of girls still there I really hope this is it and Mitchell can find a way to steer the ship back on course. Like @jessejames said, there is enough talent still there that if they can avoid the injury bug they will be able to win 20+ games. The question then comes in the post makayla epps era....what happens in recruiting over the next 12 months will probably decide coach Mitchell's fate at UK. He's facing an uphill battle there for sure. I am rooting for him...he's been great to my little sister.

Assistant coaches being promoted out of your program is a positive IMO. I get that it's another "#", but its a positive!

Sorry guys, I think the media has been overly kind and delicate in their handling of Mitchell and the whole mess. The water is swirling in the bowl and they have yet to point a finger at what is causing the program to be flushed.

Well after talking to a UK insider yesterday, this is what I have concluded from what was said to me.

Epps is a total loose cannon and a very disrespectful player/person. many times the assistant coaches asked Mitchell to discipline her and he wouldn't. She has done worse than what she got suspended for the last time. She is some of the reason the players didnt want to come back and play with her.

When Matt Insell left for Ole Miss. He was the major recruiter, camp director, coach the players would talk to, etc, etc. He did everything and Mitchell didnt have to do much. That hurt a lot. A players coach.

Maci Morris being a starter didn't bode to well for the others. Regardless if she was good enough or deserved it, the other girls saw her as a freshmen who was given special treatment and they resented this.

But it all came down to Epps and her attitude and girls not wanting her drama and attitude.

IMO Mitchell is the only coach at UK to ever do good and I feel he will continue to do good, but its going to be tough.

Suffice to say, this is all bologna.

Just what I was told by a person with a knowledge of the program.

I am not saying someone didn't tell you this, but they don't know what they are talking about

Then refute it with some substance thats worth a darn.

The stuff about the players not liking playing with Epps is a joke. Every player I have ever spoken with who has played with her says they absolutely love being on the floor with her. She's passionate and competitive...she's always been a team over me player. She'd rather her teammates score then herself...she celebrates her teammates successes more then her own. That alone tells me that whoever fed him his info is just spewing total garbage

As to what has been going on, I already shared that. Most couldn't believe it because there was basically nothing to share...but if you want to chase rabbits then go ahead.

Eveything I have heard refutes this and last I have been told is that Epps is and has been liked if not beloved by her teammates.

Interesting that Mitchell has come out and taken the blame yet people want to slander Epps. I think this is a case of people wanting there to be more to the story for whatever reason but all signs are pointing to Mitchell being the problem and not the players. If Epps was truly the problem that information would have been made public a long long time ago. Players are routinely thrown under the bus when at fault. When successful coaches are at fault they are protected.

What incentive do any of the people that left gain for saying Epps is why they left? If a player comes out and slams Mitchell then other schools won't take them in. If a coach comes out and slams Mitchell then they won't get a new job. If either a player or coach slams Epps nothing happens to them.

Read between the lines people.
