Believe me LB I know where you are coming from on this too. Personally I wouldn't care for it, but like you said, if their parents don't have an issue with it so be it. By the way LB I really enjoy your insight and great play by play of the games. I even have my 78 yr old mom turned on to BGP. She enjoys high school sports and told me that reading your play by play is almost as good as being there. Thanks again for everything you do for high school sports!!!

I've been a coach for a long time and I have 2 daughters that has played multiple sports for a lot of different coaches . In my book its a NO NO !! You think the parents and players are ok with it but you might find out how they really feel when little Susie don't get the playing time she wants. I don't know the coach but if he's been there for 22 years he must know what he's doing and he's probably a great guy but its not worth the chance when he has other options . JMO

I will fully assume this coach is 100% innocent of anything other than poor judgement.

 

My issue, though, is his complete lack of awareness that this is inappropriate despite intentions. High school girls , as a group, are sensitive about their body. Having a male authority figure slapping one of two parts of their body that they may be most sensitive about MAY make SOME very uncomfortable. THAT by itself is why I would take issue with this coach and his lack of awareness.

 

I've coached girls before. As a male, I can't talk to girls, motivate girls, congratulate girls the same way I can boys. That shouldn't be a shock to someone.

 

If I were the E-Town principal I'd have a polite conversation and ask him to step back and look at how this MAY be perceived. Not by adults. I'd ask him to put himself in the shoes of the girl on his team who is uncomfortable with the slap AND also too timid to say "I am not comfortable, coach."

I haven't read every post and I will eventually. Either way, if a man can't smack his female players on the butt then females need to coach females and males need to coach males. I think we can all agree that isn't the way to solve the issue.

Whether it's a girl I'm coaching or a lady I'm holding the door open for, I'm not slapping a female on the butt.

 

An added note, I wouldn't slap a male player either.

Well said Clyde. Really kind of shocked that there is a debate. This should not happen; there's no coaching training or sexual harassment training that says this is probably OK if nothing is meant by it. No coach should slap the rear of any player no matter what the sex of the player or coach. If he's been doing this for 22 years, I'm shocked the principal or AD hasn't provided him proper direction on this. Wow!

 

Look at it another way, can you imagine a supervisor slapping the rear of a female employee who just delivered an awesome presentation? No way; fired and probably sued.

Well if it wasn't an issue or problem, it has now been brought to light with this thread and I bet it ends up leading to someone complaining or him stopping on his own. Which I don't think he has meant anything bad by it, it probably just was something he has always done without even thinking about. However with how things are today, that has now became something that it is just safer not to do.

Here's my take for what it's worth. Coach Mudd has been coach 22 years and all of a sudden we have an issue. Granted I don't approve, but if this man has been doing this for 22 years and not been an issue, why are we addressing it now? Besides, I think the Bible gives us a good solution to this situation. "To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled." Titus 1:15. Since we are having this discussion could let us know where some minds are.
